Book Description

Set in the 11th century, Book Two of the Montbryce Legacy is the story of Caedmon Woolgar, the illegitimate son of a Norman Earl, Ram de Montbryce. A warrior who has always believed he is the son of a dead Saxon hero of the Battle of Hastings, Caedmon's discovery of his illegitimacy threatens to destroy him and his marriage to Agneta Kirkthwaite. He seeks redemption by going off on the First Crusade. Agneta harbours hatreds of her own over the massacre of her family and the destruction of her home—a crime Caedmon unwittingly participated in.
Can love help them overcome hatred and forge a powerful dynasty of their own?
A Man of Value is a medieval romance, set against the backdrop of the rule of King William Rufus and the attempts of the Scottish King Malcolm to take control of Northumbria from the Normans. Caedmon's heroism during the First Crusade takes the reader on an emotional journey to find himself as he travels across Europe to Asia Minor.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Series Continues 7 Oct. 2012
By Loves Reading TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:Kindle Edition
The Montbryce Legacy series is exceptional. Once again Anna Markland has come up with a winner in A Man of Value. Caedmon is a real man with strengths and weaknesses, who makes both good and bad choices. Agneta is a woman of the times who has suffered terrible tragedy as many saxon women must have. But she rises above it and makes a good life for herself. Against the fascinating backdrop of the Crusades, Cademon must face a terrible truth about his heritage that goes against everything he believed, something that turns upside down the lives of many good people. As always, the setting and time period is described in wonderful detail. I could taste the dirt, hear the swords clang. This story is a skilful blend of real history and fiction that really brings the time period to life. Highly recommended for anyone who enjoys historical fiction.

5.0 out of 5 stars the second book 15 Oct. 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
This is the second of The Montbryce series and was even better than the first. It just makes me want to gobble up all the others by this author. Every character even the secondary ones are great. Rhodri is a must for my next book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautifully written! 17 May 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Set in the tapestry of ongoing conflict and politics in the year 1087, this sensual, bittersweet love story between Agneta and Sir Caedmon Woolgar is beautifully written.

Neither would declare their love, even after being married and sharing uncontrollable passion, in fear that it wasn't reciprocated. He felt she'd never forgive the part he'd played in the destruction of her home and her parent's death, and so kept his true feelings to himself. Attracted from the day she'd met him, Agneta fought her love saying nothing, believing he had no deep feelings for her anyway.

Caedmon, along with his mother and a party of others fled from the growing hostilities in their area. With his mother's help, he arranged for Agneta and him to be wed and they all left together for his birth home in Normandie. Because he was a Saxon and had deeply buried dislikes for the Normans, he found living there uncomfortable. Pulled apart by his dislike of the people, nevertheless his love for the house and lands inherited from the Saxon who he believed to be his father did make him happy.

Until he found out the truth. That he'd been living a lie his whole life. Conflicted, full of fury at life's injustice, he left his home and fled to join the crusades where he found himself fighting alongside the Norman's who he'd always held in such distain. To understand the loyalties involved--those that drove the actions of our hero--it's imperative to accept how deeply ingrained was a man's heritage.

The research in this book shone through every page. Many facts about the rivalries, battles and governing royalty were woven into the story...so if you like history, you'll love A Man of Value.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Captivating Read! 25 Feb. 2012
By Lorrie A. - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I was immediately caught up in the lives of Agneta and Caedmon Woolgar. From their first meeting, they have a chemisty that cannot be denied. As their love for each other grows, they both struggle with their feelings for each other and their ancestral roots. Agneta is a passionate and loving woman, but her conflict with dealing with Caedmon's past actions could be too much to overcome. Caedmon is a fierce and passionate man who will do anything to gain Agneta's trust and love. Just when I thought their love would prevail, Caedmon is forced to deal with the truth about his parentage, which throws his life and love for Agneta into turmoil.

Anna Markland weaves a fantastic tale of love, passion, raw emotions and inner conflict. The characters become real people and I was transported back to 11th century England, with all their trials and tribulations. Caedmon's experiences and realizations while on the Crusade are both raw and enlightening. The historic detail wound into their love story is simply brilliant! A fantastic read!

I am immediately starting Anna Markland's third book "If Love Dares Enough".

5.0 out of 5 stars liked it even more than the first 10 May 2012

I am so intrigued by the characters in these stories. I love the strong women who struggle to overcome their own demons, as well as the complicated men who likewise must discover their own self worth. Sometimes the history can bog down the novel's development, but generally it adds substance to the storyline. I'm absolutely hooked.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Read! 7 Feb. 2012

I enjoyed this story very much and though I didn't fall in love with the hero, I found his journey of self-discovery very interesting. I found Caedmon's and Agneta's love story sweet but it was not main story for me. I was more interested in how Caedmon would find out Ram was his father, how Ram and Mabelle and their family react to Caedmon, and how did Ram really feel for Lady Ascha. It was a love story that encompassed all kinds of love - romantic, familial and friendship. I really enjoyed reading this book and I got a good dose of history as well! Thank you Anna Markland!

4.0 out of 5 stars a man of value 7 Sept. 2012

a man of value was another example of how the different clans had to fight for land and titles. I am so glad most of the stories end happy, because they were proud and honorable people.
