Review

'Gutsy, exciting and heroic with a love interest ... it is unexpectedly thought-provoking.' -- The Historical Novels Review, February 2003

Product Description

Sergeant Jack Crossman's second adventure finds him still in the heat of battle in the Crimea. Having survived a dangerous covert mission in The Devil's Own the man known to his comrades as 'Fancy Jack' now faces new horrors at the Battle of Balaclava. In the confusion of the conflict Jack witnesses the carnage during the hopeless and tragic charge of the Light Brigade when more than six hundred British cavalry troops charged Russian gun emplacements, mistakenly following orders that, as they were passed down the chain of command, had been misinterpreted. Kilworth's rousing narrative of courage on the field and his vivid descriptions of the horrifying realities of the Crimean campaign are related with verve and meticulous historical detail, in the spirit of the great military adventures.

4.0 out of 5 stars A review of 'The Valley of Death' 24 Nov 2003
Format:Paperback
I enjoyed this book thoroughly - I think it's a good sequel. It's not as gripping as a sharpe, and I still think that the characters need to develop a bit more. I also thought the title inappropriate - the light Brigade doesn't feature for very long at all - and Fancy Jack doesn't even take part! (had it been a sharpe I'm sure B. Cornwall would have found a way to include sharpe in the charge..)
However, despite what I've said it does keep you waiting to read the 3rd and I would reccommend this book to my mates and to my family. I hope that this review has helped you make a decision...

A good fast paced story in the same vein as the Sharpe stories. I enjoyed reading this but parts of the book left some nagging doubts about the historical accuracy of some of the facts which the book was based around. Nevertheless I found this and the previous book in the series (The Devils Own) enjoyable.

3.0 out of 5 stars a bit boring 13 April 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is the second book I have read by this author and to be frank I found it to be a tad boring apart from the last couple of chapters. Maybe I was expecting something akin to a "sharpe" adventure and in that respect I was disappointed. This is perhaps one of those books that you read when you have nothing else.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Valley of Death 2 Jun 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is an excellent series of books by Garry Douglas Kilworth. The descriptions of the conditions that the soldiers had to endure are so graphic that you can almost picture the scenes. A real shame that only the first 3 in the series are available on Kindle.

5.0 out of 5 stars Valley of |Death 23 May 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is excellent reading, reminiscent of Bernard Cornwells "Sharpe". I was happy to find their are several books containing this character and, this being the second, immediately bought the first, "The Devils Own". I have now read the first three and the standard is maintained throughout. If you like sword fights, battle scenes, skulduggery and the odd romantic interlude, this is for you!

5.0 out of 5 stars A cracking tale of the crimea
If you love Sharpe you will love this. A simpler story with less information on the whole strategy of the war but Grossman (sic) and his platoon are loveable rogues.
