Arduous Journey, Compelling Read,
By
This review is from: Valley of the Casbahs: A Journey Across the Moroccan Sahara (Paperback)
A very enjoyable and compelling read, Jeffrey Tayler paints an evocative picture of the people of the Draa valley and fast disappearing ways of life of nomadic tribes people. He describes his ardous desert journey with great humility, sensitivity and humour. Throughly recommended. He's written a book about the Congo as well so that's next on the travel-reading list.

More than a travel guide,

This review is from: Valley of the Casbahs: A Journey Across the Moroccan Sahara (Paperback)
Jeffrey Tayler writes really good prose and his writing captures both the places he visits and the spirit of the people he meets. I received this for Christmas and started it after the family left and didn't put it down until it was finished. I've just ordered "Facing the Congo" by the same author which probably speaks volumes. For an American he really is very open minded and well informed. I thoroughly recommend it to anyone who wants to find out about parts of the world that they are unlikely ever to visit.

Interesting and absorbing account of the Draa Valley,
By
This review is from: Valley of the Casbahs: A Journey Across the Moroccan Sahara (Paperback)
I read this book whilst travelling through southern Morocco and I found it a fascinating and illumining read. Talyer describes the characters he meets on his travels with surprising dept and colour. He also provides a thought out description of the history of the region. All in all it makes for a captivating and entertaining read, recommended reading whether you are visiting the region or not.
