This book has no pictures or maps (I was hoping for some more of Jodie Lee's wonderful artwork after seeing the beautiful Vanyel on the cover). The stuff on Mercedes Lackey and her inspirations are nice enough but more like a newspaper article than a book. Then the majority of the rest comprises of song lyrics and synopsises of each book. Nothing a good Valdemar reader doesn't already know and have. :(

I was looking forward to this book to fill in some of the holes, and maybe foreshadow some future developments. I wasn't disappointed as far as that went. However it appears that no-one actually checked that all the singers were using the same song-sheet.
The glaring error that caught my eye was in the location of Errold's Grove, the setting for the "Darian's Tale" trilogy. It was shown on the map as being in one place, but described in some detail in a fictional "Travel Guide to Valdemar" as being in quite another.
I was also disappointed that the map didn't extend as far as the city of "White Gryphon" and was unable to nail down the location of the capital of the Eastern Empire, both major sites in various books.
Lastly no mention was made of how the recent book "Take a Thief" massively contradicts previous books regarding the early life of the hero, Skif.
I look forward to the Second Edition with interest.
