Book Description

7 Mar 2008
Women are over four times more likely to have a caesarean birth now than they were thirty years ago and eight times more likely than they were fifty years ago. One of the main reasons that the rate is so high is that women are not encouraged to give birth vaginally once they have had a caesarean despite there being no evidence of the benefit of repeat caesareans for mother or child.

Aimed at women who have had a caesarean or repeat caesareans, Vaginal Birth After Caesarean (VBAC) provides suggestions for constructive ways to achieve vaginal birth when this is the right option for mother and baby.

As well as detailed explanations of all the pros and cons of VBAC, the book contains several real-life birth stories, a comprehensive glossary of terms and essential information for parents-to-be.

4.0 out of 5 stars VBAC After Caesarean Review 9 Feb 2009
Format:Paperback
This book is really useful for those who are considering a VBAC. There is lots of technical information in here too which can only help when you are dealing with health professionals who may not be well versed on any available research. One downside is that it would have benefitted from a section on maximising the chance of a successful VBAC. As it stands the book focuses on the benefits of VBAC, the risk factors and gives some really interesting case studies.

In preparation for another baby this book has been invaluable to me - it presents statistical information, medical opinion, midwifery options and case studies from mothers who have chosen VBAC. Clear, concise and to the point, articulate but not preachy. A very useful reference book - to be reread and recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars A very informative book 5 Jun 2013
Format:Paperback
This is great book to arm mothers to be with information about vbac. It provides the pro and cons allowing a mother to make an informed choice for herself rather than being pressured by medical professionals. Having a vbac was very important to me which I can happily say I achieved, but I definitely felt better informed after reading this to fight my corner.

5.0 out of 5 stars Succinct and useful 26 Nov 2012
By K. Hall
Format:Paperback
is a neat little book absolutely packed with useful information for mothers considering a VBAC, and those supporting them.

It is worth reading just for its forthright introduction explaining exactly why the authors choose not to adopt the tentative and controlling jargon often used by health professionals. The careful use of language in the book is in itself empowering.

Reading this book, I learned that 70-80% of VBACs are successful; that the risk of VBAC is lower than the risk of a planned Caesarean; and that the reasons commonly given not to "try" to have a VBAC do not appear to be evidenced across the board. Even the section dealing with higher risk groups shows that in most cases a VBAC can be possible.

The second part of the book includes several VBAC stories, not all of which were successful; however the stories demonstrate and affirm the wide range of experience even within this segment of birth and labour.

This is a useful and succinct guide, and I highly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Short, fact filled and easy to read 14 April 2008
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I bought this together with Nicky Wesson's home birth book as I'm planning a home VBAC. This book covers all the reasons to VBAC as well as the physical and medical aspects (ie should you have continuous fetal monitoring (no point), when to go to the hospital (as late as possible) etc.
