Not the jayhawks! 2 Mar 2008
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
On first listen to this i was disappointed that it wan't a jayhawks album or at least sound like one, but after a few plays it's for this reason that i love it. With Chris Robinson (the black crowes) producing, this album shares a similar feel to his New Earth Mud lp (which i also recommend). The overall feel of the album is laid back and warm but it's not without a few lively moments. True Blue, We'll Get By & Vagabonds are the stand out songs for me. The `laurel canyon family choir' add a bit of colour to the songs and are a nice touch. I found it to be a grower, so persevere with it!

Gary Louris is simply one of the finest songwriters around. Why The Jayhawks never became one of the biggest bands on the planet is anyone's guess. Perhaps their sound was a little too 'English pop' for US tastes and too 'Americana' for the UK. For me, it was a perfect blend that should have gone down well on both on sides of the Atlantic. Whatever, I give thanks that Louris soldiers on, producing work as brilliantly consistent as this. Vagabonds is more 'pop' than Rainy Day Music, less so than Smile, occupying the same territory as arguably The Jayhawks' finest album, Sound Of Lies. Every track is a gem but the brightest highlights are True Blue, Black Grass, D.C. Blues and the epic title track. This is the first truly great album of 2008 and essential for anyone that appreciates classic songwriting. Simply superb.

Well I liked the Jayhawks, but I was disappointed in parts with Vagabonds. I didnt find the song hooks as catchy and some of the lyrics seemed at times contrived or disjointed, but a lot of it was up to the usual Jayhawks standards. So I keep listening, more to some tracks than others, and hope with time it will be more appealing, but I suspect that its more likely to go to the second hand shop sooner or later. If you can geta listen to it before purchase, that may sway doubters one way or the other, though it didnt work for me. Diehards will love it, I've no doubt. Me? I've got every Gram Parsons song on vinal, CD or both so I'm no judge of impartiality.

A bit disapointing...
Maybe it is just me but I am a bit disappointed by this album. At his best Louris writes some wonderfully bitter sweet love songs that few can match. Read more

Well it would be, wouldn't it?
Here it is. In the absence of any Jayhawks activity, 2008 promises Gary's solo album right here followed by a collaboration with Mark Olson. Sounds like a good year for good music. Read more
