HISTORY

It all began in 1983 when Mr Bernd Schneider, founder of Vacu Vin, came up with the idea for the Vacuum Wine Saver. His idea for the Wine Saver sprang directly from the taste of spoiled wine

Together with his brother John, an engineer, he developed a device to preserve opened bottles of wine. Today, the Vacuum Wine Saver is used in over 30 million households in more than 75 countries throughout the world. In 1986 Vacu Vin was founded to manufacture and distribute the Vacuum Wine Saver, soon to be followed by the introduction of many other innovative houseware products. Today, the Vacu Vin product range has proven its success by being granted over 20 international Design and Trade Awards

All products produced and developed by Vacu Vin are distinguished by their originality, as well as their favourable price-to-quality ratio."

With the Vacu Vin Tea Stick you can make a perfect cup of tea. Scoop up your favourite loose tealeaves into the stick and place this into a cup of hot water. With the Vacu Vin Tea Stick you can make a perfect cup of tea. The Tea Stick allows the leaves to flow around and create their genuine tea flavour. Using the convenient slide mechanism you can squeeze the water out of the stick and place the Tea Stick upright. The Tea Stick won’t drip after use on your table or kitchen work top. The left over tea leaves can easily be removed from the stick after use and all parts can be disconnected and cleaned in the dish washer.

I had rather hoped that with the tea stick I could wave farewell to teabags. Which? Gardening, the magazine published by the consumer watchdog, found that six out of the seven largest tea bag manufacturers, do not make fully compostable bags.

This is a good effort by vacuvin to replace the bag, which in my opinion isn't quite pulled off. The principle is good, but I found the resulting brew weak. If I used more tea leaves, then the boiling water couldn't circulate sufficiently around the leaves.

The process for removing the tea leaves is also not quite as simple as you are led to believe. Attempt to expel them while they are hot and you sting your fingers. Leave them to go cold and they set into a tough little pellet which resists all but the most violent attempts to be removed from the device.

After only a month, this has been relegated to the back of the cupboard , alongside the teaball. I'll keep looking.

VacuVin Tea Infuser 2 Aug 2011
Seemed like a great idea but is in fact pretty fiddly and awkward to fill with tea leaves. They should include a funnel of some sort. Also a messy afterwards. Tea bags look a whole lot better now...

The concept of tea sticks is quite good and I was really excited to try one, but perhaps I chose the wrong brand. For there are two major negatives with this device that I just can't get past. One, the thing is just not that easy to load (or charge) with tea especially if the container in which you keep your tea is deep or worse still you are running low. The way you load the stick or wand is to push it into the tea inside the container et voilà the wand is charged. Sounds simple enough, but the reality is unless your container of loose tea is fairly full, it just won't be that easy. A secondary issue with loading the stick has to do with the type of tea. Not all teas are created equal. Some variety use broken leaf tea and other whole and still other a mixture. Broken tea works pretty well with this system as they are generally of a finer consistency. When you attempt to load leafy varieties or specialty teas such as a Christmas blend it is much more difficult to get the tea into the wand. The other problem I have with this system of infuser is that it just to brew properly. I pretty sure that there are two reason why this is: 1) the holes in the tip of the wand are very small and there are not many of them, thus water is not able to flow freely through the interior of the wand resulting in a very weak and insipid cup of tea every time; and 2) the way the tea is load result in the tea becoming compacted, rather than loose again preventing water from flowing in and among the tea leaves. On a positive note, the one benefit to this system which actually inspired me to try it, is the ejection system for expelling the used tea leaves. On this infuser it is a manual systems (I've seen other that have a spring loading system) and works likes a ram rod. You simply remove the cap on the infusing wand and push the black ram through the wand and in seconds the infuser is clean as a whistle. Unfortunately easy to clean doesn't compensate for weak, insipid tea. So I'll probably be giving mine as a gift to someone who either doesn't drink tea or isn't much of a friend.
