From the Back Cover

Jacque Rivette’s delightfully bittersweet and highly entertaining comedy follows the romantic escapades of Camille (Jeanne Balibar), an actress who returns to Paris for the first time in three years to star ina play directed by her Italian lover, Ugo (Castellitto). But then she meets up with an old flame, Pierre (Bonnaffe), and sparks of attraction begin to fly between them once again. Meanwhile, Ugo flirts with a romantic dalliance of his own as he attempts to seek out a lost manuscript with the aid of bewitching young student Dominique (de Fougerolles). Rivette’s deft interweaving of the characters’ exploits is set against beautiful Parisian locations, which, together with sparkling performances, make for an engaging tale of enormous wit and charm.

Truly theatrical 29 July 2002
Format:DVD
This is the first film by Jacques Rivette I've seen, and I'll definitely be watching out for more of his films if they're all up to this standard. Camille arrives in Paris with her Italian partner, theatre director Ugo. It's been three years since she was last in Paris and she feels the urge to go and look up an old fling. From that moment on, we witness a film of twists and turns, moving from real poignancy to wonderful comedy. It follows many familiar themes in French cinema - theatre, dance, music, literature, philosophy, but mainly the search for love.

It has a quite consistent pace, being quite methodical in building up to the finale, but what a finish! It has the funniest ending to a film I've seen in a long time, with the 'duel' between Ugo (Sergio Castellito) and Pierre (Jacques Bonnaffe) being hilarious.

While quite different in scope, I would recommend this to anyone who has taken their first step into French cinema with Amelie. This is an accessible but intelligent film, and should appeal to anyone with a sense of romance.

Delightful 17 Oct 2009
By DL Productions UK TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE

I'm having a bit of a Rivette season at the moment, so I decided to watch Va Savoir, not really knowing what it was about, on the strengths of Secret Defense - so when I saw the first few moments, I was worried this was going to be a flop, how wrong I was!?

Jeanne Balibar is Camille, an actress who's love of Italian plays has brought her into Ugo's latest project, all about love, and how it divides and conquers us. She's restless as she's in Paris, and thinks about a past lover, a philosopher obsessed by a German philosopher - and then there's Ugo, a guy obsessed with finding the final works of a playwright he's always dreamt of putting on, but as with everything, a triangle of love, lust and intolerance brings them across a thin line - one which none of them will ever forget.

This is yet another masterpiece from Jacques Rivette, and beautifully written by Pascal Bonitzer and Christine Laurent - the way it masquerades as a film, yet is very much like a play is magnificent; sometimes rather breath taking - with the irony they are in a play, and their lives are like a big play. It's beautifully photographed by William Lubtchansky - who has worked with Rivette before, and it shows good clarity, and the dialogue is nice, and makes good use of language, yet is very direct, - though this film runs nearly 3hrs, it doesn't really stray from what it is meant to do, and some people might find this annoying, but it's all got a purpose, and will make you watch again and again as new pieces fall into place.

I did find Arthur a bit wooden (Bruno Todeschini) but the best actors in this were Jeanne and Sergio, and they deserved to win the Jury Special Prize at Cannes in 2002.

This is a film not to be missed, but you have to be patient and allow it to settle down - otherwise you'll miss what it's trying to say.

I really enjoyed this film. A little bit more mainstream and accessible than Rivette's usual offerings, it certainly isn't his best, but like all his films, I could watch it again and again.

Light hearted and very charming, it may be slightly disappointing for a Rivette fan (as I am), but taken on its own merits, it is a very enjoyable film.
