More About the Author

Lindsay Porter has written more than 50 books and well over 1,000 magazine articles on motoring, caravanning and other technical subjects. Lindsay was born in 1949 in the industrial, English, West Midlands, the main home of the British motor industry of the time. He well remembers meeting a bloke on the shop floor at John Thompson Motor Pressings in early 1958, who had spent his life building traditional ladder-frame chassis, shaking a newly pressed floorpan for the yet-to-be-launched 'Frogeye' Sprite and saying, "Look 'ow it wobbles -this **** thing cor work!" What on earth would he have said if he'd known that plastic body panels were only a few years away?

Lindsay became a school teacher in 1972 and found his time in the profession deeply rewarding but left in the early '80s, as his writing work began to take off. His first piece of professional writing was carried out in 1979 for DIY Magazine, explaining how he and wife Shan built and extended their own country cottage - the one they still live in today. It was quickly followed by regular articles for Practical Classics Magazine and classic car books and manuals for Haynes, with Shan always on hand with the camera.

His MGB Restoration Manual (Haynes Publishing) - first published in 1982 and still in print, as are most of his books - was the first heavily illustrated, step-by-step manual of its type, guiding the reader through every stage of technical processes in pictures as well as with friendly, helpful text.

In 1985, Lindsay launched Porter Publishing Ltd and produced the first commercial range of classic car videos, in association with Castrol, with over 70 titles available. The printed word soon followed and Porter Publishing was commissioned by Fiat, Perkins Engines and Halfords, among others, to produce workshop manuals, including the first all-colour manuals.

At the same time, Lindsay continued to write, including books and magazine articles on caravanning and motor caravanning he and was for many years the Technical Editor at Land Rover Monthly magazine.

Now well into his sixties, Lindsay is still writing books and is heavily involved in developing future publications that will deal with the practicalities of eco-energy for the home and car owner. Watch this space!

Product Description

Converting a panel van into a camper is no easy task, some may take it for granted but when you see what's involved you need to be more than just an enthusiast. No doubt though, Lindsay's book does make the job easier. His pride and joy, the finished article adorns the front cover. Get reading and down to work! - Caravan Cruise Ireland

This book is a very comprehensive step-by-step guide to starting with a T5 van and finishing up with a Camper. It contains some 272 pages that are profusely illustrated in full colour together with captions relevant to the task being worked on. The book starts with a 'Safety First' chapter and there follows another 6 chapters that are all subdivided into sections with each covering, very thoroughly, certain aspects of the conversion. It covers just about everything in fine detail and should give the persons carrying out the conversion all the confidence needed to finish the task and be proud of what they have achieved. One chapter with many sections that caught my eye especially was the one-headed 'Extras and accessories', and within this a lot of very sound advice regarding wheels and tyres is given. If I was thinking of doing a conversion - which I am not - I think this is the book I would rely on to lead me gently through the not inconsiderable task taken on. - Review from the VW Owners Club GB, Spring 2008

Recently published by Veloce, this is a comprehensive hands-on guide to converting a T5 (2003-on) panel van to a Camper. With over 260 pages and more than 1500 illustrations and detailed instructions, it takes a very practical and hands-on approach to everything from planning and choosing fittings to building and fitting the interior furniture. Highly recommended for anyone wanting to convert their van to a Camper, or wishing to upgrade their existing conversion with additional features and accessories. --Review from Volkswagen Driver, February 2008

About the Author

Lindsay Porter is a top-selling motoring author and has written literally dozens of manuals on classic and modern cars. More than any of his books to date, this manual has been a real labour of love. Lindsay and his wife, Shan, have been keen VW Camper owners for many years ever since they converted their VW Vanagon/Caravelle Syncro to a Leisuredrive Camper and started to produce the popular predecessor to this manual. Lindsay hopes the reader of this manual gains as much pleasure from reading and using it as he did producing the book and living with his VW Camper.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected 28 Feb 2008
I've just received my copy of the book today from Amazon. I'm very disappointed, it should be titled "How Leisure Drive convert a T5 van to camper". I'm thinking of doing a partial conversion of a T5, hence my purchase. I was expecting details of how to go about doing this myself. For example, furniture plans/templates with instructions for furniture construction etc. This book is just an advert for the Leisure Drive conversion company, it shows them converting a van, albeit with lots of photos. Don't waste your money on this book if you're planning a Self Build and need some how to do it instructions.

This book sadly does not do what it says in the title. It is an inconsistent collection of photos that the author has collected during the conversion of her own vw T5 carried out by professionals. It gives a vague description of how certain things were done but nowhere near the level required for a DIY conversion. Even worse at times it includes the manufactures instructions for certain products. The book is neither original nor interesting, it is hard to make a positive comment. In summary I feel cheated paying for this information which could easily be found from google, or instructions from camper-van products!

1.0 out of 5 stars NOT The T5 Camper Conversion Manual 27 May 2009
This book should be renamed "How to Pay Someone Else to convert your (mainly)T5 to a camper, while you take a lot of photographs."
Nearly everything is 'off the shelf,' from & fitted by a manufacturer or agent - And done well - but it's not DIY as implied & few of us have that sort of money.
Lot's of - 'don't try this at home/get a registered Corgi/Electrician/Converter' to do this for you (though you could do a bit, though we're not going to tell you how...)
There are almost no useful diagrams or schematics for the water or electrics. No dimensions for units, directions for cable runs. Nothing about fitting your own rock&roll bed, seat belts, carpet lining...The list is sadly endless.
If you are doing a DIY - look at both the Build your own Motorcaravan & the Motorcaravan Manual from Haynes by J Wickersham - While these are not VW specific, but they treat you as an adult & have information you can use!

Described as a 'camper conversion manual' - but that is misleading, the author didn't convert the van himself and the book mostly shows a photographic record of what the professional converters did, some 'how to' tips but NOT a comprehensive guide- overall I was fairly disappointed.

Good if you're already very good at serious DIY. You're going to need a good friend as well to help and hold things for you.

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money 24 Dec 2012
By Mrs O
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Purchased this book hoping it would give an insight into converting a VW Transporter Panel Van to a Camper. The book is little more than a documentary of the author farming out the conversation to a number of 3rd parties. Comes across as a recommendation of 3rd parties to complete the conversion rather than a guide from someone who has single handedly converted a camper themselves. Farming out all of the work is easy and takes little knowledge, understanding or effort. Don't worry, once I've completed my own conversation I will probably write my own book which will give all of the pitfuls and cost cutting ways of a DIY Camper Conversation. I will have learnt through trial and error and my own mistakes.Watch this space.....

1.0 out of 5 stars More brochure than manual 25 Feb 2012
Don't buy this book if you want any practical advice on how to convert a campervan. This book just documents the authors expensive professional conversion of his campervan - by professionals. If I was going to do that why would I need a manual in the first place? It gives no practical advice on dimensions, material selection, fitting or anything you need to do a DIY conversion. This is just an elaborate advertisement for the company Leisure Drive - don't buy, it's a waste of money! Wish I'd read the other reviews before shelling out. Again - don't waste your money on this, it's just an expensive brochure for Leisure Drive.
