4.0 out of 5 stars Denpa VT50 1Gb voice recorder / PM3 player, 30 Aug 2007
By Dave (Kent, UK) - See all my reviews
The Denpa VT50 is approximately the size of a normal mobile phone and fits nicely in the hand. The LCD is of a reasonable size which is quite readable for those with 50+ years old eyes (expect for the EQ symbols). It met my specific requirements for a device that had in-built MP3 encoding from microphone, line input and FM radio. In addition a removable rechargeable battery was a must. The controls are quite intuitive and consist of the almost standard mobile phone 4 way navigation key with centre button, a DEL key and a MODE key on the front. The record, stop and play buttons are on the side. It wont take long to get used to the various modes of recording etc. Pictures can be seen on the website www.techstyle.co.uk So what was it like in actual use? Direct encoding from the microphone is good at 64 kbits, OK at 32 kbits, 16kbits is pushing it - but forget 8kbits! speech is unintelligble at this lowest encoding rate. But dont blame the Denpa, re-encoding from 64 kbits to 8 kbits on the PC gave equally poor results. Did I mention that it actually has built in stereo microphones and that you can use an external microphone (they supply a mono lapel mic). Its better to use a fixed microphone sensitivity to avoid encoding artefacts introduced when using auto-sensitivity (automatic gain control). At maximum sensitivity (4) there is a noticeable background hiss, but that can be reduced using the built in EQ which is activated by repeatedly pressing the OK button when in playback (and watch the tiny icon change), or by reducing the sensitivity. Ive not tried the optional FM wireless microphone but www.techstyle.co.uk have some audio samples on their web site and it sounds good. FM radio reception is good, but significant additional noise is introduced when trying to record weaker stations. You need to have a good strong signal, when recording quality is good and in stereo at 96k and 128k bit rates. There is also the limitation of the headphone lead being used as the aerial when on the move. This latter issue would be the case with a "walkman" style FM radio. If you absolutely must record FM radio it would be better to connect up to a separate FM radio with its own aerial via the line in / mic socket. Direct stereo line in recording at 128k is also very good meaning you could playback a CD in a portable player and record it directly into MP3 by linking the headphone socket of the CD to the line in socket of the Denpa VT50. The device has a standard USB plug - revealed by pulling the case apart - but it's only USB 1.x - which means relatively slow file transfer (go and make a cup of coffee if you want to fill it in one go). Transfer rate was around 90 seconds for 50Mb. Battery life, using a 700mA Ni-mH AAA rechargeable battery was more than 5 hours continuous recording. Playback only should be a lot longer, and playback of music downloaded was excellent (128 k). 64kbit files give about 35 hours of content - and 128kbit files around 17 hours. I deducted points for the added noise on FM when recording and the USB 1.x interface - hence 4 stars instead of 5 stars. Dave
