4.0 out of 5 stars Great for Linux 25 Nov 2012
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
Truth be told, running Windows on my Mac doesn't interest me that much. I spend a fair amount of time testing Linux distributions and have been using Parallels and Virtualbox for this until now.

VMWare Fusion 5 comes with both a DVD and a USB-based installer. As the DVD drive is starting to disappear from Mac hardware, this was a nice touch (if a little necessary).

Installing Ubuntu in VMware is a breeze. The whole process is guided from start to finish. You simply give it a username & password and it takes care of the rest, even installing VMware tools for you. Other distributions don't fare so well. Mint for example requires manual installation of VMware Tools, but there is a comprehensive help document included in the Tools installer to help you get everything up and running.

Performance is good, Flash video plays full-screen without judder on my 2011 iMac, which is more than can be said for Virtualbox and Parallels.

Great product.

4.0 out of 5 stars It Just Works 21 Dec 2012

Verified Purchase
After settling on the latest version of VMWare Fusion, I decided to order the box instead of ordering a product key online. Safe to say, I made the right decision. Inside the box was a nice printed manual, the product key, stickers, a cd and a 2gb usb stick in case you don't have a cdrom drive! At the front, the box also opens to reveal various details about the product which is a nice touch. The box also doubles as a nice accessory for the office.

Installing is as easy as double clicking the application on the provided installation medium - I was up and running within minutes!

I've used just about every virtualization software for the Mac, and TBH VMWare is hard to beat. It's easy to use, has good virtual hardware, and is well supported. The only other commercial product i've used is Parallels, and while that works I felt the product support was lacking. I've also used Virtualbox which is free, but both its interface and feature set is sadly lacking when compared to VMWare.

One major criticism of this product however is that 3d performance is not as good as with native hardware, but this problem is shared across all solutions. If you want a windows gaming machine which can run crysis, you're better off just using a real windows box. Otherwise general performance is not too different than what you get from bootcamp, though depending on what you are running your experience may vary.

4.0 out of 5 stars Almost seamless transition 20 Jan 2013
By Jonathan VINE VOICE
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
When I converted from PCs to Macs a few years ago I needed to be able to continue running some PC based software. At that stage there was a choice between dual booting using Boot Camp or using one the emulators such as VM Fusion or Parallels. I opted for VM Fusion and since then have generally found that this product works well on my MacBook Pro. It's generally stable but you do need to have enough memory on your computer to run both programs together - upgrading to 8GB of RAM made things much quicker. I occasionally have difficulty getting the printer facility to work from Windows (I am connecting wirelessly to my printer via another Mac). Accessing the file structure of both OS is simple and seamless. As I feel that the Mac offers better security, I rarely access the internet using Windows - switching to Safari if when I need to go on the web. Connecting peripherals is easy - you are given the choice of which operating system you want to connect to. Overall if you need to run Windows on a Mac I would recommend this product.

3.0 out of 5 stars Effective for some non-Mac devices 17 Dec 2012
By M. C. Cresswell VINE VOICE
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
I wanted to try Fusion 5 to get my now-relatively-old Samsung NV3 camera to speak to my Mac. I've been downloading the images from the camera to my work PC and then manually transferring them via USB to my home iMac. After a bit of faffing and not a little guesswork, I installed Fusion to attempt to run their bespoke Windows software through the Mac. Hey presto it worked, enabling me to import images painlessly and subsequently through to iPhoto. Though the same cannot, alas, be said for the package that came with my other camera, a Fuji X10. The manual is a shocker and virtually pointless, as is the double format - but hey ho. From my qualified success so far, pretty good.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another step in the right direction 17 Dec 2012
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
An upgrade that although you won't see much difference there's certainly a massive speed boost. Upgrade or initial install is very quick however even when brand new you'll need to download an update which makes the disc / stick irrelevant. The fact they now provide the stick for those users that are without a optical drive is a nice touch.

The price on Amazon at sub fifteen pounds is defintely worth the upgrade - I wouldn't pay more than 30 as there's always deals knocking around in these virtualised softwares. It is good for taking snapshots as restore points for your virtual machines as well as the usual day to day tasks you still need windows applications for etc.

I use VMWare Fusion on several Macs and have never had an issue (have used 3,4 and now 5). It works perfectly across company networks too. Just make sure you install the VMWare Tools to get all the functionality working. A feature I never use but is very trick is the Unity mode that allows you to drop windows icons on your mac tool bar - if the operating system it requires isn't running it will quickly fire it up to allow the application to run.

A great piece of software but just don't pay over the odds!
