The book had a mark on the front cover, which was not what one expects after paying £50 for something. Of course the cover is made of a natural material, and will not be uniform, which is part of the appeal. But this was an actual "picked away" bit on the front. Extremely disappointing.

In addition, the thinline format makes it a decent size to hold in your hand, but the "bleedthrough" was considerable, and made the pages more difficult to read - I'd rather the book was thicker & each pages that much clearer, at the end of the day.

I also wasn't exactly taken with the half-moon arrangement on the inside of the covers - not very attractive.

A high quality bible? Well, that's debatable. Worth £50 notes of your hard earned? Definitely not.

I'm giving up entirely on Crossway products, I've been let down a couple of times now.

Buying the Olive Tree digital bible reader for my iPad was a much better investment.

I have a couple of nicer ESVs and thought I'd try this one out as it was much cheaper than other premium printings. I'm more of a single column person and prefer black letter, so I won't complain about it being red letter or double column because I knew what I was getting. The size is good, a bit bigger than a Cambridge Pitt Minion, but still small enough to be easy to carry and to fit nicely in a bag. The leather on this is fantastic. Nice and soft and thick and good sewing construction. It has leather lining on the inside of the cover as well. This was a surprise as I'd never expected that at this price. They have not done text line matching, which makes the bleed through a bit more noticeable, but that's nothing new for bibles. When I first got it I was a bit concerned as the binding seemed quite tight and that it might not lay flat, but that quickly changed. It is a sewn binding so it should lay flat, and after just a day or two of use it sits fairly flat. And this should only improve with time and use. All in all, a great price for an excellent quality bible.

Pleasantly surprised! Excellent binding! 30 May 2012
By M. Wolf - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Leather Bound
(Disclaimer: I am only providing my initial review of the build quality of the bible, not the ESV text itself. I hope others will do the same. See pics.)

I just received my ESV Vintage Thinline Bible in Cowhide Chestnut and I must say I am very happy with the quality of this binding.

First, the feel of the leather is very soft --somewhere in between calfskin and genuine leather soft--and will only improve with use. The soft feel is also due to the fact that the inside of the cover is also made of leather rather than paper, making the cover very pliable. The inside leather cover extends into and is glued under the first heavy paper page by 1/2" which I understand only makes the binding stronger. The cover also extends beyond the text block a bit more than other bibles which will only serve to help protect the gilding and paper. The outside cover overlaps the inside cover and is stitched together; however, the outside cover is not cut with a clean line and is rather jagged looking at points. This adds to a handmade look and feel to the binding but some may not like the look of this.

Second, I am not a fan of red letter editions of bible text, but the publishers chose a deep red color rather than a pinkish-red, making the red letters bearable.

Third, this is a thinline edition, so there is some text ghosting. However, it is very limited compared to my wife's ESV tru-tone thinline. They have used better paper with this edition.

Fourth, I really like the look of the ribbed spine, although the gold leaf lettering of the embossing is not as clean as I would like. Minor issue probably resulting from mass production, but not a big problem considering the overall quality of this bible at a great price.

Fifth, the color is a darker brown than in the picture as viewed on my computer screen, which I was very happy about. It's less on the red and more on the brown side.

Some potential concerns that only time and use will show: 1) the hemisphere design stitching may prove to result in a crease that is visible on the inside of the cover, but I suspect this won't cause any problems since the inside is also made of leather and not paper which might crease easily. 2) Currently the bible doesn't lay open flat easily when at either ends of the text block (Genesis or the concordance), but I suspect this is due to the gold gilding causing groups of pages to stick together that I will spend the next few days separating, page by page, and by the presentation pages and maps at either end of the text block. Having had other bibles that had the same issue, I'm certain this will go away after some use.

All in all, a very good purchase for a price you can't beat for this quality, especially with a lifetime guarantee from Crossway.

Great, Very Nice Bible 7 Oct. 2012
By William Schaerer - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Leather Bound
I bought mine from Crossway at about the same price. At Crossway you can only get it this cheap with the Impact pricing; tax still has to be paid so instead of it being 75 with the Impact pricing it is around 80. I only bought it from Crossway because I thought the money that I paid extra would be able to go somewhere for them.

Leather is soft. It doesn't lay completely flat yet and I've had it about 2 weeks. It is the exact same text as the trutone thinlines, so there is not needing to adjust from where you remember places to be. The width is a bit wider than the trutone, which will probably keep it safe from a few more scratches on the guiding.

Great translation and great product.

edited my edit, but below a good comment was posted.

Great size; great quality 25 July 2013

I love this size and style Bible for taking to church on Sundays. Is the same size as my notebook, will go in my purse to free my hands, yet the print is big enough for aging eyes to see. It is well made. And I LOVE the smell! Another wonderful reason to pull out the Word of God!

Good quality for the money. 22 Nov. 2013

Cowhide binding is great and it is stiched around the edges just like a high-end goatskin binding ( Allan or Cambridge). Bible lies flat when you open it. Format is in standard double column. I don't know if its a paper quality or an ink issue but there is some ghosting. The font is a little small for my taste (maybe 8 or 9 point) I am now in the bifocal zone.

Sincerely, Q.
