I remember reading the VCs during its first run when I was a kid, and like more obscure recent releases such as RoBusters and Ace Trucking Co. was excited when this smart new imprint was announced to join my growing library of classic 2000AD back stories (Harry Twenty on the High Rock sometime soon please!)

The VCs was heavily based on the novel Starship Troopers, with this tale's Steve Smith being a surrogate Johnny Rico as he transforms from green rookie to hardened combat veteran over a series of encounters with invading reptilian aliens called the Geek.

What is interesting about the VCs is the sense of isolation felt by Smith. The only Earthman on his vessel (the rest were born on offworld colonies), he is looked down upon from the start by his shipmates, who assume as an "Earthworm" he will actually look down on them. In truth he is somewhat in awe of them all, and the writer avoids the cliche of them all overcoming their prejudices - these men would die for each other because their bond of duty demands it, but they never actually like each other that much.

Some of the supplemetary characters (a cowardly politician, plus some borderline racist Chinese people et al) are two-dimensional, but hey, this was written for kids in the late 1970s, and a very large and sometimes graphic body count and spectacular battle sequences (the destruction of Mars for example) more than compensate.

The artwork is hit and miss compared to the later Rogue Trooper, being a typical 2000ad example of stories being passed around to artists with dissimilar styles almost weekly to meet deadlines. Unsurprisingly, the awesome Cam Kennedy shines the most, and his flawless ability to design and render futuristic technology is stunning.

A slender volume compared some of the other reprints, the VCs is a fascinating trial run for the epic 2000ad future war stories that followed in its wake, and is worth getting for some of the meanest starship and spacesuit design you will see.

From 2000AD's vaults comes this gem from the 1970's. It was written by the guy that later created ROgue Trooper and it never quite reaches the brilliance of that series (IMHO) but is still very good in its own right.

Similar in feel to the classic Heinlein book Starship Troopers, this is good, gritty sci-fi with some excellent artwork and well worth a look.
