Product Description

A comprehensive three hours plus celebration of a glorious age of British Variety featuring the very best performers and singers from radio, music hall and the theatre! Performances rarely seen since they were shown in the Pathé cinema newsreels of the day. 'Variety Acts and Turns Of The Mid 1930s is a nostalgic celebration of a rich diversity of Variety entertainers; balancing acts, jugglers, dance bands and jazz bands, organists, strongmen, comedians, musicians, dancers - modern and ballet, roller-skaters, actors, singers and even a Bird Circus . Artistes include the Mantovani Orchestra, comedian Bert Weston, Arthur Askey, double act Bennett and Williams, actor Tod Slaughter, Naunton Wayne, Ronald Frankau, Leslie Henson, Bob and Alf Pearson and many, many more. In the mid 1930s, Pathé developed its filming of variety acts by building elaborate sets for their performances. Often, these studio performances would be mixed into filmic 'dream sequences' to enhance their impact. Camera interviews with selected stars also added another new dimension. Pathé intriguingly filmed a blind man who could see and a Wild West themed set from celebrated act The Van Strattens. Also included here is a visit to the famous Players Theatre in London s Covent Garden. 4.0 out of 5 stars A nostalgic wallow for folk of a certain age. 28 Dec 2012

You will notice that one star is missing in my estimation of the contents this disc - and this applies to all the other discs in the series ( I purchased the lot ) I'll come to that later. Here before your very eyes - and ears - an enormous cavalcade of acts and stars of the 1930's and 1940's preserved on film and faithfully reproduced on these discs (Average - 3 hours per disc) Here is an extract from the enclosed leaflet of one of them:" Balancing acts,Jugglers, Dance & Jazz Bands,Strong men,Comedians, Musicians & Dancers etc....". Astonishingly there is a sequence of Sir Henry Wood rehearsing for the recording of Vaughan-Williams' "Serenade To Music" with the LPO & sixteen famous solo singers of the day, plus a shot of the composer himself looking at the score - fabulous ! The acts are all "cold" - no audience - which slightly inhibits one or two of the comedians, but the cinema audiences would have provided the missing laughter.. I have waffled on enough - so to the missing star. Each disc contains a number of somgs sung by Bass Baritones, smartly attired and ususlly standing erect before a grand piano & the accompanist, and singing songs Patriotic,Rural, Naval, Arial, Regimantal, Sentimental etc ..until the very sight of the next one induces apoplexy !! Perhaps a small price to pay for the general excellence of this series. Edward

5.0 out of 5 stars Big Hearted indeed. 31 July 2013

This is a close-up memoir of a beloved entertainer with lots of intimate detail. It's just like sitting with Askey in a pub as he reminisces.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing Video 15 Jan 2014
Verified Purchase
Disappointing, as the acts where filmed without an audience in an empty studio and this meant that a lot of ambience and also reaction from audience was missing. There were a lot of acts that I considered dross but some real gems as well. I will buy some of the others as they do provide a view of something that now no longer exists and reminds me of my childhood when my grandmother took me to the Variety shows at the theatre
