I basically have two cats who are allowed out all day but are locked in at night - mainly because they're black and they'd get run over :(
Anyway, we've had an open litter tray for 1 year and every morning the cats never use it but just play in it and leave a massive mess.
Now we use this, they use it properly and there's no mess. It comes with a filter on the top so it doesn't smell and is lovely and deep. I had thought my boys wouldn't be able to jump in but they got the hang of it after 5 mins!

This litterbox is an excellent size. It's not unusually tall in my experience, in spite of what other reviewers say, coming up below knee level on me (I'm 5ft 9in = 175cm). The pan is just a bit deeper than the average box. Our cat is petite (4kg), 7 years old, and still has absolutely no trouble climbing into the box. It would be a tricky climb for a kitten, but you should always use a smaller tray with kittens. The high tray is actually very helpful; if a covered litterbox has a shallow pan, then cats (especially male cats) may relieve themselves too close to the side and you'll get dripping down the outside. Not with this litterbox -- the tall prevents that.

The door is excellent because it completely covers the opening (which helps to prevent smell), swings very freely in both directions so that it's easy for my cat use, and it's firmly attached. Other swinging-door litterboxes tend to fall off over time, which is annoying. This one doesn't do that. It's very well-attached.

The plastic is nice and sturdy, not flimsy. The top snaps securely into place, and has an air filter on top that really helps prevent smell, while still allowing a little air flow for the cat. We clean the litterbox once a day, and never notice any serious odor. Ours shipped with the top the same color as the bottom (blue), and it has a nice sleek look to it.

If you've never used a covered litterbox before, you'll love it. It really reduces mess and smell, and a lot of cats prefer the privacy. If your cat has never used one, here's how you teach them to use it.

(1) Show the cat the litterbox without the cover, and let them use it a day or two, cleaning as normal.

The idea is good, but this cat tray is VERY large and when they say 'large' what they mainly mean is 'high'.

I would say that the height of the main pan lip means it's only feasible for pretty substantial cats as they'll have to go up into it, rather than straight along (which is what most cats do). However, the construction is also quite flimsy so if you do have a very large cat which is vaguely vigorous in the tray, I suspect the litter tray wouldn't be very stable.

I have had to give mine away to a friend with two large cats. Although she says the height of the tray does keep the litter off the floor, she finds the cats will only use it with the top off, though.

I bought this litter tray because with the one my cats used before litter always ended up all over the floor. The door of this litter tray is not great but I took it off and most of the grit still stays inside.
I was worried that the cat's might associate this tray with their cat carrier which they associate with much hated visits to the vet - the mere sight of the carrier is usually enough to send them running for the cat flap not to be seen for hours afterwards. But they got over their initial suspicion in no time and now use it happily.

The door on this cat litter was much higer than i thought, luckily my 3 cats are quite big and have no problem getting into it, but it might be too high for a smaller cat or kitten. Maybe it is just mine, but the door keeps coming off, i have to put it back on at least once a day. it is well made and fairly strong, apart from the problem with the door it is a good strong litter.

You know before I was thinking about just getting a high tray with a rim but this toilet is so much better! Really great cat toilet, good size, quite nice looking, I mean a lot better than open trays, really well made, strong good material, mine came in a nice blue colour, easy to remove the top for cleaning, but at the same time very safe attached, that is once you close the 4 locks you can securely grab the toilet even with contents and move it somewhere else. My kitty is only 3 months old and I just adopted him from CATS PROTECTION and he had absolutely no problems to figure out how to use it and I know the litter he was using back at the shelter was just a simple tray. Also it has a filter to help avoiding bad smell. I ordered it wed night and I got it Friday morning! Amazing value!
