Product Description

Product Description

The author tells the story of Britain's V-bombers - three of Britain's finest post-war aeronautical products - from their inception and design, through their operational careers, to their retirement and preservation. The Vickers-Armstrongs Valiant, Avro Vulcan and Handley Page Victor captured the imagination of a generation, as the "V-Force", for between them they were the British nuclear deterrent in those difficult, early Cold War days. The author also covers the Short Sperrin, which provided much research information for the three bombers. Of the Valiant, Vulcan and Victor, the Victors were the last to be used as tanker aircraft for in-flight refuelling.

5.0 out of 5 stars A thorough survey of Britains great V Bombers, 5 Feb 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: V-bombers: Valiant, Vulcan and Victor (Crowood Aviation) (Hardcover)
There have been several books written on the V bombers and quite a number particularly on the Vulcan, but none that give this balanced picture of the three major types and the Short Sperrin. Normally the Valiant is the poor relation, but on this occasion it is given its proper due and the author pays full respect to its early and pioneering role.

This title follows the typical Crowood formula, which has not always resulted in the most balanced or well-produced of titles, but on this occasion the publishers have served the author well by providing him with a well-printed and well-produced book.

The author distinguishes this title by the choice and size of the photos and the general readability of the text. He follows through the development of the Short Sperrin to the Valiant B1 and B2 then the Avro deltas to the Vulcan, finally the abortive HP 88 through to the Victor. Jones develops and illustrates all the significant roles of the types in bombing, flight-refuelling and reconnaissance not neglecting them as engine and other specialised test beds.

Though there are one or two typos and small errors this reviewer feels that it would be churlish not to award this book five stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars A good read and very informative, 30 Jan 2005
By A Customer
This review is from: V-bombers: Valiant, Vulcan and Victor (Crowood Aviation) (Hardcover)
I greatly enjoyed this book, even the second time through. It is well written, informative and interesting, without getting too bogged down in details. There is enough detail for all but the most fanatic reader, and the narrative works around it well.

If you're looking for a single volume covering the British V-Bombers you will not be disappointed with this one. Great subject, great prose, and great production make it a winner.
