5.0 out of 5 stars Deceptive lizards 21 July 2009

Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
With a fantastic rendition of history juiced up in a slick sci fi fantasy inspired by the large scale political events of the first half of the 20th century, Kenneth Johnson gives us edge of our seat thrills, awe, tension and terror served up with a topping of laser blasts, explosions and latex faces being torn off!!!

50 enormous saucer ships hover over the 50 largest cities, each ship approx 3 miles across, counting down to the time when contact with the curious apprehensive humans is made. Out from the alien shuttle atop the UN building emerges a humanlike figure with slick red uniform and shiny boots and a pleasant diplomatic demeanour. "We have come in peace to all man kind" he says in a peculiar resonating alien voice. As he goes on to state the purpose of the arrival of himself and his fellow Visitors, by saying his planet is in an environmental catastrophe, his kindly but semi stern face reaching to the hearts and minds of every human on the planet glued to their tv sets, we are persuaded to help and in return we will share in their vast knowledge of technological and health achievements and more. From there on in the manipulation begins, the Visitors appear benevolent whilst militant by helping keep law and order, the ones most loyal to the Visitors enjoy special perks and priviledges, and the rest of the masses enjoying a relatively normal life. There are skeptics who have reservations about the Visitors true intentions, namely Mike Donovan (Marc Singer) and Juliet Parish (Faye Grant) amongst a handful of others, some of whom mysteriously disappear. The story unfolds into a tense feeling of suspicion, fear and terror as worldwide domination becomes stronger down on the ground and up above in one of the huge ships Mike Donovan makes a few interesting discoveries of his own.

Johnson writes with slick style and consistency, the book makes for easy but pleasurable and riveting reading, as you turn each page you can feel the goosepimples of excitement and adrenalin and your mouth becomes thirsty for more (literally! Well mine did anyway!) A must have for all lovers of sci fi, history, politics, and action, all of which are melded together in this fantastic epic, Im sure the Resistance fighters whoever they are in the world whose heroism his work is dedicated will feel happy to be appreciated in such style.

1.0 out of 5 stars An edited version 5 July 2009
By J. Ellis - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Please be aware that this is not the original version of the book. It claims to be the full mini-series but actually what it contains is the first mini-series and an epilogue. The epilogue re-writes the original ending and prepares the reader for the new book recently published by Johnson. I was very disappointed that there was no warning that the book had been extensively altered.

5.0 out of 5 stars Book and Movie Both Equally Good 26 April 2011
By Jinger Jarrett - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Mass Market Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I have seen all of the movies, as well as the TV series, and I've read both of the books. One of my favorite shows is the current series, which I think will be an even bigger hit.

I am a fan, and I am a big fan, because this series is very consistent when it comes to great story telling. It has a great concept, and the writing is consistently good even when Kenneth Johnson isn't involved in the process.

The first book, as well as the movie are pretty similar except for the ending. Johnson does introduce an additional element into the book that doesn't occur in the movie. It's just as well because for those who understand the "deux de machine" literary technique, introducing something into a story line to rescue the heroes, rather than having the heroes extricate themselves from their dilemma, does detract from the story. This story is no different.

If you love science fiction, you will love this, and if you love science fiction with political undertones, even better. This story line is especially relevant these days with all of the political upheaval in the world, including in the United States.

I highly recommend both of the books, even though the second book has nothing to do with the second movie, and the movies. This is a series with a message, and it's a message that's relevant today. It's also entertaining, which makes it well worth reading/watching. Definitely one of my all time favorite fiction series.

Also recommended:

V: The Second Generation

(Please note: the second book is totally different from the second movie. Many of the things that happened in the movie never happen in this book, but if you like good story telling and enjoyable entertainment, then read it.)

1.0 out of 5 stars Not AC Crispin's complete novel 7 Jun 2009
By Barbara S - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I am both a fan of "V" (mini-series & the TV series that followed it) and of pretty much anything A.C. Crispin writes. I was thrilled when I noticed that A.C. Crispin's novel "V" was being released in Kindle form and purchased it right away. Unfortunately, this is not the full novel - this is just the mini-series version, which ends halfway through the story. I returned the book and will be the first in line to buy the novel if it's ever released.
