N.B. The music is nothing like Tool or A Perfect Circle!
The latest offering from vocalist Maynard James Keenan is very layered and a lot more industrial than any of his previous work. Helped out by "a revolving door of talented people" (as he describes it) including Danny Lohner, an ex-Nine Inch Nails guitarist, a lot of different sounds emerge from the album. For me, the most overiding instrument however was Maynard's own voice. He sings in a very low pitch for most of the album and in many places his voice is mixed on top of itself, creating a smooth tribal chanting sort of effect. The lyrics are mostly inaudible, but i think that's because the focus is intended to be on the music.
Song by song:
Queen B - 5/5
One of my favourites on the album - has a strong drummed beat and Maynard's humming and singing creates a great atmosphere.
DoZo (Version 2) - 4/5
Very rhythmic, again with some chanting in the backround, quite relaxing.
Vagina Mine - 4/5
Any Tool fans out there would probably agree with me that in places throughout this song, Maynard's vocals are similar to the low voice he uses in Wings Pt 2 off 10,000 days. For those who dont know, thats a low talking voice - great to chill out to. Interesting guitar and nice song overall.
Momma Sed - 5/5
My favourite song on the album, this has an INSANELY catchy acoustic guitar riff, which makes me want to listen to it over and over again. Also makes me want to dance and has a great chorus. I guarantee you will be addicted!
Drunk With Power - 4/5
Army-esque drumming and Maynard's quavering voice make a haunting, peaceful mood - good song.
The Undertaker - 4/5
While I do like this song, Maynard also produced a different remix for the Underworld: Evolution Soundtrack, which is much better and I would seriously recommend you buy off iTunes, if you're unsure about whether or not to buy the album. The remix really makes me want to dance, but the album version simply isn't as good.
Trekka - 4/5
An eerie song - Maynard's whispering and rhythmic chanting in the backround is pretty spooky but catchy.
Indigo Children - 5/5
Another favourite of mine, this has really funky synths and catchy drumming.
Sour Grapes - 4/5
Strange song - Maynard sounds like he's preaching, but still good - more chanting in the backround.
Rev 22:20 (Dry Martini Mix) - 4/5
Again, a similar issue to that of The Undertaker, Maynard made a remix for the Underworld soundtrack, which in my opinion is a 5 star song and should be bought off iTunes.
Overall a really good album, more music to chill out and in places dance to, than music to headbang to, but i should think most Maynard fans won't be disappointed. I should also mention the the album artwork is very funny and makes it worth buying the actual physical CD. Enjoy!
