Product Description

Product Description

This quick-start guide to VHF Marine Radio teaches skippers and crews the essentials of radio use afloat. You must have a licence for the equipment and one for the operator: this guide tells you how to obtain these licences and what you must do to qualify for the VHF Short Range Certificate (SRC). It also explains how the radio is used in Routine and Distress situations, with actual sample radio conversations. You will learn how Digital Selective Calling (DSC), introduced with the GMDSS, can automate calling of other vessels and shore stations. You find how different radio channels are allocated to different purposes and understand the major controls found on every VHF DSC Radio. This book offers suggestions for other resources which can help you make the most of your investment in marine radio, and help you to attain the all-important Radio Licence, to stay safe and legal.

More About the Author

Martin Quaintance is a qualified yachtmaster, founder of LightMaster Nautical Training & Software and creator of many PC programs for maritime training. His mission is to help yachtsmen to achieve greater confidence and enjoyment afloat, using world-leading interactive training software.

Martin was born in south London, England and his early working life was centred around mainframe computers and electronics, with ICT, IBM and Xerox. He then founded and directed a printing company for over ten years.

During the past 21 years, since pioneering the use of computers for small-craft training, he has helped over 5000 individuals, sea schools and maritime professionals to learn, or to teach essential nautical skills more effectively.
His clients range from first-time leisure sailors to harbour authorities, marine colleges and maritime defence agencies around the world.
When the Royal Yachting Association planned to roll out a new SRC VHF radio course, and again for their small-craft radar course, they turned to LightMaster for a PC-based simulator around which each course could be constructed. Most RYA Recognised Training Centres which offer these courses have relied on LightMaster Simulators to provide hands-on experience for their students.
It was this contribution to maritime safety which was recognised by Martin's election to Fellowship of the Royal Institute of Navigation.

While his years teaching practical yachting courses have confirmed that truly interactive, hands-on software prepares you to cope better with life afloat, Martin recognises that there is still a place for books in the learning process.
Accordingly, he has applied his skills to producing a series of books which teach his specialist subjects to aspiring and seasoned yachtsmen.

2.0 out of 5 stars Very short book! 20 Mar 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
If you read very slowly it may take 20 mins. Does not even give the radio alphabet!. What it says is useful but mostly logical. Worth even 1.50? No....ultimately one is paying for an advertisements other products. Better to buy a proper course that you will need to do anyway.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really Good Useful Guide 12 Nov 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is a very useful guide for anyone new to radio communication on yachts and other small craft. Its tightly focussed pages introduce the main uses and limitations of marine VHF radio; operation of the standard controls; and voice message procedures in routine and distress situations.

The book explains the Ship Radio Licence and VHF Short Range Certificate
- the two types of licence you must hold to use marine VHF safely and legally - plus where and how to obtain them.

You are then provided with links to a range of free and paid-for resources to help you learn and test your knowledge in preparation for the essential SRC exam. The information is absolutely up-to-date, even detailing the new requirements coming into force in January 2014.

I recommend this low-cost, no nonsense Guide, which will get you started very quickly and help you towards safe and proficient use of VHF radio on boats.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent introduction to ship's radio 28 Oct 2013
By Vernon
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This short guide is from an acknowledged expert in software for training practical leisure sailors.

It provides just the right amount of information to whet one's appetite for learning how to safely use modern radiotelephone equipment on small craft.

Clearly no short guide can teach one to the standard needed to obtain an operator's licence but it provides both the necessary background and also links to how to obtain both formal training and software to practice at home.
