During the Arab Spring movements, the world witnessed the power of social media to dramatically shape events. Now this timely book shows government decision-makers, security analysts, and activists how to use the social world to improve security locally, nationally, and globally--and cost-effectively. 4.0 out of 5 stars Great resource on how to harness the power of social media 1 Oct 2013
By Ben Rothke - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
While teenagers, marketers, and celebrities seem to dominate the sphere of social media, all those connections can be a valuable tool for security professionals. The notion of social media analytics (SNA) didn't even exist a few years ago, but it can enable organizations to mine intelligence from social media conversations.

Using Social Media for Global Security is written for cybersecurity professionals, security analysts, policy experts, decision-makers, activists, and law enforcement personnel. It explains how to use the myriad social network communities and SNA to ensure greater levels of security. That said, this is not an easy read. The reader needs to be quite comfortable with the core social networking sites, in addition to advanced networking tools. The user of these techniques should also be comfortable with statistics and advanced analytic techniques.

The book notes that terrorists and criminal elements have been exploiting social media for years. Most security professionals will need to play catch-up in the realm of social media. For those who want to harness the power of social media and are willing to put the time and effort into getting that data, this book is an excellent resource.

4.0 out of 5 stars Groundbreaking book 12 Feb 2013
By J. Rodgers - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Gupta and Brooks truly understand how two seemingly disparate fields, social media and international security, can be merged and used in an area of analytics that is just beginning to mature. They break down social media platforms in terms that anybody can understand and effectively map out how trends in global security are magnified and played out with the use of such platforms....This is definitely a must buy for any aspiring or professional security practitioner interested in learning more about social media and its security implications!
