Product Description

Product Description

With the help of XML and Java from scratch, you will build a Web site and application for ChaseWeb Furniture-a fictitious catalog furniture company. All of the information on products, prices, vendors, and so on, is rendered in XML. You'll learn how to display products on the company Web site, take orders, produce a paper catalog, and communicate with the external databases of vendors using XML. The from scratch format is designed to teach novice programmers the hows and whys of programming in the context of creating a functioning application.

Format:Paperback
I Bought this book on the understanding that is for learning both XML and java from scratch, but while the XML side of things is hectic but understandable, the java side of it disappears off over the horizon all too quickly leaving me behind with too much content and not enough explanation. The other downfall is that the book takes you through designing a website, getting progressively more complex as it goes which is a great idea, however unfortunately on chapter 4 the scripts supplied in the book do not appear to work leaving you unable to follow the excercises for the rest of the book, which is a distinct disadvantage for chapters 5 through to 9.

Good coverage and well laid out. 7 April 2001
By Stefan Mischook - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I am a big reader of tech manuals and as such I think that I have a good frame of reference when it comes to computer tech. manuals. This book is very well presented and laid out. The concepts are illustrated by examples and the text does not wander off into details that can easily be had on the web. The whole point of these books is to distill(clarify) the information that is available online. This book gets you up and running quickly.

Excellent if you already know server-side Java! 20 Aug 2001
By "eddiebee" - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
The title of this book seems to imply that it is meant to teach you both Java and Xml in one go, but you really need to have already done some serious Java programming and particularly have a few servlets under your belt. It an excellent book for those who wish to learn the specifics of using Java to read and write Xml. It takes you by the hand and shows you how to turn your servlets into applications that can turn XML into any format for the web or B2B using SAX, DOM, JDOM in Java programs to take advantage of the power of XSL, XSLT and XSD.

TERRIBLE 13 April 2002
By Kyle - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This book trying to cover everything among three-tier design within 470 pages, which is impossible. In order to understand this book, I need to read other books, like "Javaservlet" and "Beginning XML". But after I finish those reading, this book is not necessary anymore, so why wast time on this book? Some of the programs in this book are not executable and even worse.....some figures (screen shot) are misplaced.
My opinion of this book is "terrible"!
