Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

The biggest appeal of this book is its companion software with three separate versions of Linux on CD-ROM--Red Hat Linux 4.1, Slackware Linux 3.1, and Caldera Open Linux Lite 1.1. You'll be able to try out all three versions without going through the trouble of downloading (though these are old versions of each flavour).

The text focuses on Red Hat Linux, though it's similar to the other two versions on the CD-ROM and you can easily transfer lessons to the others. The authors begin by explaining how to install Linux and how to configure it properly for your hardware environment. Then, they talk about key commands--file management and the like--before spilling the beans on how to run programs.

The information on how to get DOS and Windows programs to run under Linux with dosemu and other jury-rigs is notable. There's even a list of programs (popular and less so) that have been made to run under Linux; each entry comes complete with the e-mail address of a person who claims to have done it.

From there, the book moves on to explain X Windows, time-sharing servers, vi, Internet tools, and the mechanics of using Linux as an Internet server (though there are other whole books that cover the subject in more depth). Overall, this book distinguishes itself by showing you how to do unusual things with Linux. Get this book if you want to see your new operating system do some unusual tricks. --Amazon.com --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

1.0 out of 5 stars A theory book; no practical hands-on use, 10 Dec 2003
Contrary to other reviews, this is not a good book on Linux. Too advanced for a new user, no real info for an advanced, it fails to fill any need. It has chapters on the look of destops, loads of info on changing the colour scheme, etc, but virtually no info on functionality: no practical uses. 2 chapters on the cosmetics of KDE and Gnome, but no comparisons, no pros-and-cons of each. It has 5 pages on how to use Realplayer (the easy part), but only half a page on how to install it (the hard part). There is no step-by-step insructions on how to perform tasks, no instructions on installing device drivers or software, no "how-to's". It's hard to figure out who this book was written for: too complex for beginners (it assumes you know all about command prompts and compiling applications), no practical info for advanced (no network troubleshooting, no detailed configuration instructions). On the back cover it says "user level: Intermediate-advanced", but in the introduction it says it's for people installing Linux for the first time, and not for Guru's.

There are much better books on the market.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good Book but problem with CD, 25 Aug 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Using Caldera OpenLinux Special Edition (Special Edition Using) (Paperback)
This book is very good in the sense that it covers almost everything from how to use Linux effectively (play games, use office suite, play audio CD, etc) to system administration tasks. Good price for such a complete book. The problem is that I can not run the CD from my CD ROM drive. Whenever I run the setup.exe, my CD ROM just tried to read it, but then it stop responding. I don't know why this happen but I cleaned my CD ROM drive already and the problem still exists. So far I never had problem with my CD ROM. I just bought this CD-RW 1 week ago. Must be problem with this CD software.
