Product Description

Review

'The book is very well-researched and it is refreshing to read chapters based on survey results rather than opinion... This book offers lots of ideas about the nature of heritage, has good case studies and an academic approach to the issues based on many years experience.' - Australian Archaeology

Product Description

Examining international case studies including USA, Asia, Australia and New Zealand, Laurajane Smith identifies and explores the use of heritage throughout the world.

Challenging the idea that heritage value is self-evident, and that things must be preserved because they have an inherent importance, Smith forcefully demonstrates that heritage value is not inherent in physical objects or places, but rather that these objects and places are used to give tangibility to the values that underpin different communities and to assert and affirm these values.

A practically grounded accessible examination of heritage as a cultural practice, The Uses of Heritage is global in its benefit to students and field professionals alike.

Great read 12 Nov 2011
Format:Paperback
This is a brilliant book, as are most works by Laurajane Smith. Her AHD is an important interpretation of the history of heritage in the UK.

Yes, it is academic, but potential buyers should be able to figure that out before buying it. Don't be fooled though: the arguments are strong, vivid, and far from being convoluted. The narrative flow of the chapters is good and it is highly entertaining and insightful.

Set Course book 31 Oct 2010
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I had to purchase this book as it is set requirement for the OU's new course on Global Heritage. I certainly would not recommend it for general reading on Heritage as it is far too acaedemic and there are lots of more interesting books available on the subject - only buy this if you are doing the course or you may feel dissapointed.

Laurajane Smith 11 July 2011
Format:Paperback
Sorry I hated this book.
The level of writing was very complicated and confusing.
This was a set book on a university course.
This made Chaucer (in the original) seem simple.
it was probably the most difficult to read book I have ever encountered. Sorry for those who have to study from it.
