Book Description

25 May 2013
Every information system brought into service in every type of organisation requires user acceptance testing. It is by far the most common activity carried out by non-IT specialists. This book is designed to be a hands-on manual for non-testing specialists to plan and carry out an effective acceptance test of an information system. It provides a structured and step-by-step approach to effective acceptance testing and identifies ways of making the process as simple and cost-effective as possible. "A UAT guide for users: that is a novel thought! This fills a gap in my bookshelf, a volume I wish I had years ago. It would have helped me to help the business. But more than that: it would have helped business users to help themselves, and see that UAT is more than just a necessary evil, but has clear purpose, methods, goals and skills. This is a step by step guide that is clear and praise worthy. You never know, it could be a recruiting arm for professional testers in the future, brought in from the business." Peter Morgan, Testing Practitioner.

Review

As someone who started his career in testing by being told to leave the comfort of my data processing team to UAT a new system I know how hard it is to understand what is required of UA testers as to date there has been very little written or provided to help. This book comfortably fills the void that exists to help UA testers understand their role and the many tasks they have to undertake. -- Geoff Thompson A UAT guide for users: that is a novel thought! This fills a gap in my bookshelf, a volume I wish I had years ago. It would have helped me to help the business. But more than that: it would have helped business users to help themselves, and see that UAT is more than just a necessary evil, but has clear purpose, methods, goals and skills. This is a step-by-step guide that is clear and praiseworthy. You never know, it could be a recruiting arm for professional testers in the future, brought in from the business. -- Peter Morgan ...a really excellent book; well written, carefully structured and in a format that makes it easy to read and understand the topic. [...] an absolute must-read for anyone involved in systems development. -- A P Sutcliffe

Format:Paperback
Projects involving the development of software for Information Systems are regularly plagued with major problems; all too often, when the finished system is put into use, it does not live up to the expectations of the interested parties, as it is not capable of providing the functionality that was required. In far too many cases, the end product is rejected as completely unusable, despite considerable effort and enormous sums of money having been spent over a long period of time.

For this reason, it is clearly important that the new product or system is rigorously tested during the development phase to ensure that it meets the specific requirements of the client; and that before it goes live, a full end-to-end test of the functionality proves that it will perform in the way that the customer wanted.

This book delivers exactly what is described on the cover; a detailed guide to the process of User Acceptance Testing, including a number of sections that amply justify the approach put forward. It highlights the need for the product to be tested at the key stages; and demonstrates some suitable testing techniques. It draws upon a considerable amount of experience and the reports of many different projects in a wide range of sectors, to provide some valuable insight into the best practices of systems testing.

It is a really excellent book; well written, carefully structured and in a format that makes it easy to read and understand the topic. The text is regularly broken up by different bullet point lists, tables, diagrams and comment boxes making it a very engaging read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting book on acceptance testing 6 Dec 2013
By L Weale VINE VOICE
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is a useful book for a test manager or someone new to user acceptance testing. It discusses why, gives examples of test cases and just generally provides a sensible resource on UAT. My only caveat is that a lot of the discussion is around a one off phase of UAT and customers have to deal with multiple versions of software over the years. Generally thought it was a good read.

5.0 out of 5 stars The answer to ..... 1 July 2013
Format:Paperback
I read this book in one sitting. I have been involved in testing for 15 years, initially as a tester, but for the last 10 years as a test manager and as a project manager. I have never felt there was anyone to turn to to advice on what justifiable approach should be taken to UAT. Certainly some UAT would take place, but the success of the ultimate implementation was sometimes less due to the quality of our approach and more to luck. What the book is perhaps too polite to point out
is that system testers often think of UAT as 'mickey mouse' and as a job able to be carried out by anyone with some common sense when what is really needed is a common responsibility for the quality of the final product and therefore for UAT.
I have bought this book for every one of my current UAT team, stakeholders and programme manager as compulsory reading and our next UAT will be guided by its content. It is hard to believe it has taken this long for a guide to UAT to be written but thank God it is here now!
