i love what gail has done with david bowie and i wanted to hear what see can do on her own so i got this album.
i love the sound on the cd and the songs are just so good, gail puts down some killer bass on the album and see is a very good singer, there is not a bad song on the album and i find myself in a good place when i put this album on.. its beautiful and a lot of fun at the same time ...
i hope see will do another album soon..

I have over 1200 CD albums of all genres (chosen carefully over many years - none of this easy mp3 download while drunk at a bar 'convenience' for me, thank you) yet I have never been compelled to write a review for an album until now.

This album, I used To Be, was released (in UK) almost 8 years ago to the day - but I was completely unaware of it - don't ask me why. I happened on it by accident about 3 months ago - but it took another 6 weeks before it became mine - yes, that last album (complete with a broken case) had been left unsold on Amazon UK for months - perhaps even years.

This is the first time since I was a teenager that I have played an album on repeat more than 6 times. This isn't an album that will necessarily 'grab' everyone instantly - in my opinion there is nothing obviously 'groundbreaking' about it per se. But, what you take from it is subtle and quite beautiful.

There is something seemingly effortless about this album and to my mind, this is the hallmark of a genuine creative talent. There is an honesty within it that you can hear and you can feel. You just know that noting was delivered on a whim.

Gail Ann Dorsey was a singer before she became a session musician. She already released two excellent albums: the Corporate World in 1988 and Rude Blue in 1992. She has played (bass) and sang backing vocals for several musicians - the most well known is perhaps as bassist for David Bowie. Even then, I'm surprised how few people know this.

I'm of the opinion Gail Ann has the kind of voice that will best be appreciated through a quality system. I would defy any lover of excellent music not to recognise there is something unique and exceptionally good about this album.

look what the universe can do 28 Jan. 2005
By Brian Wallace (Co-author of It's Not Your Hair) - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
This stellar musician moves deftly between different genres and bestows upon each song alternately delicate and rocking touches.

The woman has mastered the tools of voice and bass and keeps pushing them to further degrees.

MS. Dorsey is one of those rare musicians who brings such depth and new life through vocals and bass guitar. Someone of this exceptional caliber gives justice to the notion of being "touched by God." Genius permeates her work at almost every step.

This accomplished disc is diverse and multifaceted with infinite textures to be enjoyed over and over again. The songs are rich and enduring.

Those of us who have followed her through the years (for me it was TFF through all the Bowie years) have been won over for some time. It's nice to see her shine all on her own.

This is such a great album - the lyrics are positive and insightful, Gail's voice is hearty and somewhat soulfull, and the music is upbeat and beautiful. The songs put you in a good mood no matter what :) If you listen to any Lite FM type radio stations, then this album is right for you.

Gail is amazing! 26 May 2004

I bought this record from the merch booth at the David Bowie tour and I LOVE IT! It has such a great vibe to it and Gail's music is so beautiful. "This Time" (track 2) is my favorite track. The song is so soothing and I play it in my car all the time on the way to work (and then bring the CD inside so I can listen at my desk). I definitely recommend this album to anyone who knows of Gail or has seen her at a Bowie show. Even if you haven't seen her yet, it is a GREAT buy.

Not so much.. 21 April 2011

I saw a lot of five star ratings on this album and purchased the CD. I am writing a review to give others a heads up on what to expect with this album.

I think she(G.A.D.) is a very talented bass player and can appreciate her skill(which you will not find on her album), yet I cannot get into her "I Used to Be" or other solo albums. I was hoping she would show case her skill level that we have seen when she is performing with other artists, but the songs are quite weak/dull.

The songs don't have any real punch or compelling melodies(no hits). This album is just too boring for me. I kept hoping there was a track I could want to listen to more than just once but did not find one.
I think this album is probably more directed to a fan base who listens to artist like India Arie but not even in a good way.

This just sounds too adult contemporary, easy, slow, and boring. If you like the artists she has performed with, you most likely won't like what she has to offer with her solo efforts. I think that she must have some very dedicated fans from her live work with Bowie and others to receive such very generous high ratings because they are quite misleading.
