3.0 out of 5 stars MUD - USE YOUR IMAGINATION, 3 Oct 2007
By
This review is from: Use Your Imagination (Audio CD)
"Mud's declaration of Independence". In July 1975 Mud were on their own, having split from both the RAK label and writer/producers Mike Chapman and Nicky Chinn. "Use Your Imagination", the first of two albums recorded by Mud for the shortlived Private Stock label, was issued in Britain on 5th December 1975 and trailered by two British top ten singles.

Notably, "Use Your Imagination" was the first real showcase for the group's original material, with writing now focussed on guitarist Rob Davis and bassist Ray Stiles, who furnished five of the songs. Some of these (notably the first extracted single, "L'L'Lucy") followed the blueprint of their early RAK hits, as did "Hair of the Dog", a contribution co-written by the group's late, great drummer, Dave Mount. Former Sweet producer Phil Wainman supervised the recordings and also co-wrote three songs including the Presleyesque "She's Got The Devil In Her Eyes" and another hit single, the ballad "Show Me You're A Woman". A more sophisticated approach (akin to 10cc and the Isleys) was apparent on the title track, which featured Ray on lead vocals. In typical Mud style, a couple of oldies were given a revamped treatment - a reggae, comical version of the Everly Brothers' "Bird Dog" and a cover of "Under The Moon Of Love" (pre-Showaddywaddy by twelve months and possibly a missed single for Mud).

The reissued CD also contains the B-sides to the two singles ("My Love Is Your Love" had also been issued as a disco single by Ellie) and the booklet contains the lyrics supplied on the original inner sleeve.

A good, if slightly flawed, recording.

2.0 out of 5 stars Loved it at 14, but hasn't worn well, 14 Feb 2010

This review is from: Use Your Imagination (Audio CD)
This was when Mud branched out on their own, moving away from the fun poppy numbers that ahd made their name. Posterity shows this was ultimaely a bad move, at least commercially. I was much into them in the mid 70s and used to play this album a lot but have to say it hasn't worn particulalry well. L'l'lucy is a good stomping single in the vein of tiger feet and the cat crept in, show me you're a woman is an OK ballad, while the title track is surprisingly good and doesn;t sound like Mud at all (Les Gray isn't on vocals). None of the rest is going to change the course of musical history but then in fairness Mud were never about that anyway.
This is a better album than the follw-up 'It's better than working', which signalled the group's slide into obscurity, although they ( or at least Gray) wer still going strong when I saw them at Hull in the early 80s.

Really enjoyed this album. Favourites are L'L'Lucy, Show me You're a woman and Bird Dog - I could listen to that song all night!! I would recommend this album to any Mud fan - it's a must to have in the collection
