I am a great fan of the work of Tony Buzan. One of my favourite books is Make the Most of Your Mind, which is some years old now.So, what is 'Use Your Head' all about? Tony takes us through a range of techniques for study which utilise the way the brain functions, rather than trying to adapt ourselves to information that is given in an inefficient, linear, way. Being the developer of Mind Maps, he shows us what they are, and how to condense and represent information pictorially: the main topic being at the centre of the 'hub', with main headings radiating from this, with progressively more specific notes leading off of these. Speed reading, mnemonics and creativity is also touched on to a lesser degree. I would also have liked to have seen a section on logic, as in the aforementioned book. Anyone who has an older version of this book, or indeed Mind Mapping books, will not, in my opinion, gain much more from reading this newer one, though the quality and presentation is improved.

Weak overview, buy the separate books.,

It seems like when these new editions of the books came out the publishers etc thought it would be worth being a little too greedy. I think this book is just there to rake in a bit more cash rather than provide you with a useful and applicable level of knowledge in the areas it's trying to discuss. It seems to get you interested in one of the many topics it claims to provide you a good depth of knowledge in, and as soon as it gets going your recommended to buy the separate book such as speed reading for a more in depth idea.With hind sight I think it would just be worth reading the individual books in the series on the topics your interested in. I bought the speed reading book because that is one of my main issues but thought it would be worth getting a good idea about all of these "brain unleashing" techniques by purchasing this book aswell. It wasn't worth it, it just didn't give me enough depth in those extra topics. In the individual speed reading book there was a whole other realm of information to be made use of compared to the advice given on speed reading in this all encapsulating book. I guess it's worth while if your not sure and want to dabble to find out what it's all about, but I'm pretty sure if your looking into these books your after a good insight into Mind Maps, Speed Reading, Study Techniques and Memory Techniques not just a quick glaze over which wasn't worth the time. Get the separate books which apply to you most. Don't feed money into this, you effectively are told to buy another book in the series for the information you thought this book itself would provide. P.S. speed reading book itself was worth while, I'm just a little angry and this one referring me to all the other books.

I first read this book in 1991 on the recommendation of a family friend. It changed my life as I adopted many of the techniques explained in the book - the major one being Mind Mapping. I use Mind Maps to record meetings, prepare speeches and for studying.I discovered Mind Maps after completing my masters in business studies (2.1). Thanks to Mind Maps, my MBA was a 1st class degree! The Mind Maps supported studying, the preparation of the various assignments and the thesis. The book is tightly written and in it Buzan describes Mind Maps, speed reading, memory techniques and a study method. He covers topics like how to improve your memory for names, how we learn and how to significantly improve your memory. It is a relatively short book and in many ways is Buzan's best. The later books can be a little "padded". If you are a parent with children studying - buy this book. It will make your children more effective at learning for their exams. If you are going back to learning as an adult,this book will give you a very effective method for studying. It will also demonstrate to you that you will succeed in your studies without working all the hours... I have bought many copies of this book and given them away to people... I highly recommend this book. Buy a packet of coloured pencils, BLANK (i.e. not lined) paper (treat yourself with a Moleskine) and Use Your Head... And unlock your potential.
