5.0 out of 5 stars lovely childrens bed time story book 2 Nov 2001
By A Customer
Having travelled to my sisters house and forgot to take any bed time reading books for my 5 year old I found this osborne childrens bible on a book shelf in her house. Emma thoroughly enjoyed the stories because they were so well writen with children in mind. The stories are easy to understand and have nice pictures on each page, also each chapter follows on from the previous one, they have some basic reference to the people in the previous stories (this was done in an easy enough way for Emma to point this out). I offered to buy Emma a new book the next day while we were in town but she asked if we could read some more from the bible book.
I think this book would make a lovely christening/birthday present for a small child.

5.0 out of 5 stars straightforward and clear 6 Feb 2011
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
My 6 year old told me that she wanted me to buy her a book about God - the bible! I looked through the various ones on offer and settled for this one. It is in simple language and despite other reviews saying not enough pictures, the ones it does have are lovely. She really enjoys me reading this to her and in fact was able to read the creation chapter all by herself (she is quite a good reader though). She made me read 3 chapters last night because she was interested in the way that the people in the previous chapters related to the next generation. It is a good introduction to children and although we are not a religious family, the fact that she wanted to know for herself encouraged me to get this. She is truly interested and the straightforward way in which it is written helps her to understand what she wants to know at her level. It may lead to her wanting to read the full story for herself I hope! A good purchase which I would recommend as an introduction to the bible for those with an appetite to learn!

4.0 out of 5 stars Usborne's Children's Bible 5 May 2010
A lovely starter! Pitched at just the right level for my inquisitive 6 year old. Very easy to follow and to read (with help). We would have enjoyed more illustrations.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very helpful 18 Feb 2009
My daughter (3 1/2 years old) was fascinated by the story of Jesus at Christmas and kept asking questions about him, and also about 'Jesus the man'

She attends a C of E pre-school and so gets some exposure to this, whilst at home there is no religion at all.

This gave us a dilemma - we didn't want to discourage her interest but had little knowledge of our own to draw on.

This book has proved extremely useful. It isn't really a bible, but is a collection of stories FROM the bible, both old and new testaments, framed in terms that are much easier for a child to understand, and each story short enough to keep the attention.

It doesn't stop the questions of course ('why were the Romans so mean?') but it does allow us to support her interest in Jesus without having to feel like we are giving her religious instruction.

I have on negative - not enough pictures. Whilst some pages are well illustrated, some have no pictures at all. At 3 1/2 pictures are expected!

Four stars.

2.0 out of 5 stars Dumbed down and dull 1 Nov 2007
I am sorry to have to write such a negative review. But we were given this bible as a present for our young daughter by a well meaning Aunt. While we appreciated the idea and present - this book just has too many mis-interpretations of the original text to feel comfortable with. I do not want my child to be put of Chritianity when she realises that romanticised stories peddled by this book don't wash with the real world. The bible is a complex text whose interpretation needs serious scholarship and I am afraid this book lacks the scholarship to be able to translate the stories into a child-friendly format. The point of many stories is so skewed that it makes you wince. The glossy cover illustration is not really representative of the content. Most stories don't have illustrations - certainly not enough to hold the attention of a child. The illustrated childrens bible looks much better.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed with the illustrations 6 May 2010
By Lolabel
I was very disappointed with the the illustrations in this bible, children need pictures to keep them interested whilst listening to the stories being read to them and this bible lacked that.

4.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful looking book
Beautiful looking book. I assume the first half is as good as the second. I had to skip 'the creation' as my 6 year old asked me to skip ahead to the 'true bit'.

Not enough illustration. Key stories like Abraham and Isaac which are fundamental to the whole Bible story are missed out. It's sanitised to satisfy the American market (?). Read more
