Product Description

"Us & Them" is a new acoustic album of contemporary folk songs firmly engaged with the realities of not-so-Merrie Olde Condemned Englande... Songs about getting up in the morning and getting on with it, shopping centres and food banks, yuppified pubs and barefoot kids, the centenary of the outbreak of the disaster that was supposed to be the war to end all wars, the disaster that is supposed to be the Minister for Education Michael Gove, drunks and railway stations, Boris Johnson and UKIP, Terry French and the Miners' Strike, and a celebration of the life of Bob Crow... a tender, bleak, angry, humane, bitter, witty and undefeated album, recorded as live as possible to make sure it sounds like it means it.

This is a brilliant album and probably one of Robb's best. The man has released over thirty albums before you even count compilations and I don't claim to have heard every one, but if you've enjoyed any of Robb's stuff and are wondering whether you should get this, the answer is yes. If you're a fan of Grace Petrie or TV Smith, or the spirit of early Billy Bragg, Roy Bailey, Leon Rosselson, Dick Gaughan, Phil Ochs or Victor Jara, or any of the newer acoustic troubadours, and you're here following up rumours of protest music with bite and political music with heart, then you should get this album.

Robb's been releasing music on his own label since the 80s with little to no support from the mainstream of either the media or the folk scene and as such is one of the UK's most prolific DIY musicians, even if musically he only occasionally falls within the associated punk genre. (This album is entirely solo and acoustic.) Too punk for the folkies and too left wing for the radio, this is a kind of "outsider music". All of which could be interesting but unlistenable if Robb wasn't also a brilliant musician and one of the UK's finest songwriters.

This album covers a range of moods, from emotional protest songs (Banks Of England, When I Bring You Roses), through just plain protest songs (Know Your Place, Win Lose or Draw) and just plain emotional songs - although nothing here is just 'plain' - (Goodnight & Goodbye, Barefoot in January) to a couple of eulogies for Bob Crow and (Kent NUM activist) Terry French, as well as two songs that thematically could be part of a sequel to the "Gentle Men" album (Last Good War, Losing Side). Robb's 'comedy' songs are usually less to my personal taste but St Gove's Academy and Who Was That Man?
