fascinating but biased?, 3 Oct 1999
This review is from: Uri Geller: Magician Or Mystic: The Truth (Paperback)
Margolis has written an extremely compelling account of Uri Geller, from the point of view of a sceptic turned believer. Geller is a superb entertainer, no question, but, to all of you who think he has genuine powers, ask yourself "Why are they so useless?" Read James Randi's book "The Truth about Uri Geller" and make your own mind up!

Having always assumed that Uri Geller was a gifted fake, I am not so sure now. This book made me think. It is both intriguing and highly readable. Jonathan Margolis has researched his subject very well, and is infinitely more even-handed than James Randi has ever been. Margolis was originally a skeptic, but gradually over a period of 2 years of interviews, research and meetings with Uri and the people who know him, revised his opinion. This book is a monument of research with each page literally packed with interesting facts and information. The good the bad and the ugly are all presented and the language is intelligent and highly readable - there is no mindless capitalized ranting as found in other authors' books. Every detail is researched and verified. People who actually knew Uri and were present when apparently paranormal events took place, give their unvarnished opinions. While other authors simply rely on the "skeptic grapevine", repeating myth as fact without ever checking authenticity, Margolis always goes direct to the source. Forget Randi, if you want a good well-written and considered biography, buy this book.

"I want you to concentrate..." - How can you not, Uri ?, 4 July 2000
This review is from: Uri Geller: Magician Or Mystic: The Truth (Paperback)
For all of those who have ever placed their hands on the televison and communicated positive energy, grasped a lifeless timepiece in the hope of seeing it tick or stared into a set of eyes on the front cover of The Sun at 1 o' clock, this book will entice you even furthur into the strange world of Uri Geller.
I first became a fan of Gellers work when I saw his house on "Through The Key Hole". I was so impressed with his Chinease style water garden and heli-pad that I knew I had to find out more about this magical entertainment mogul.
I scanned Amazon for an appropriate title and stumbled over this book by Margolis. Having read his excellent biography of Michael Palin, I could not wait for "Uri Geller" to drop through the door.
I like magic alot. Who can forget Gellers stunning escape from Alcatraz or when he made the Statue of Liberty dissapear (on a recent visit to New York, I was pleased to see that Geller had returned it). Geller is the daddy of psychological boundry bending and this book is a fascinating insight to one of the most powerful men in the world. If I had any doubts about this title, it would be that it is at times slightly sycophantic. I did wonder if Uri used his powers to shape the contents of the book, perhaps without Margolis knowing.
Nevertheless, a fine read. ROLL THE DICE !
