Product Description

Review

'Much attention has been paid to the way urban areas have restructured as a consequence of global forces, however, changes emanating from local powers have been largely overlooked. Chatterton and Hollands help rectify this one-sidedness with their first rate study of nightscapes, the increasing use of space for youth oriented consumer activities. Their empirically based and theoretically informed discussion of playscapes, including the positive role these new spaces of consumption fill in urban revival as well as the problems they pose to adjacent areas, adds something new and interesting to urban studies. This book is highly recommended to all those interested in contemporary approaches to urbanism.' - Mark Gottdiener, University at Buffalo, USA

'Urban Nightscapes is topical, superbly organized, and written at just the right level for a student market. It makes a significant contribution both to the literature on youth cultures and to the developing body of academic research on theming, branding and the entertainment economy.' - John Hannigan, University of Toronto

'I heard author Rob Hollands give a brilliant paper on the research that is reported in this book ... the book certainly matched the appeal ... An engaging read.' - Young People Now

'... a terrific book which adds yet another dimension to contemporary thinking on th meaning of the 'right to the city'.' - Cultural Geographies

Product Description

Explores how urban nightlife is experiencing a 'McDonaldisation', where big branded names are taking over large parts of downtown areas, leaving consumers with an increasingly standardised experience.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book!!!, 4 Aug 2003
By A Customer
This book presents a new and essential analysis of the changing face of British and World Nightlife. I thought it was brilliant and very readable whilst managing to demonstrate the impact of world corporatisation on our world and playspaces.
