Product Description

In many western cities, urban nightlife is experiencing a 'McDonaldization', where big branded names are taking over large parts of downtown areas, leaving consumers with an increasingly standardized experience. Urban Nightscapes takes a new look at this rapidly changing aspect of urban life, examining the relationships between young adults, nightlife and city spaces. It focuses on what the authors call 'urban nightscapes' - youthful and playful cultural activities in bars, pubs, night-clubs and music venues, which occur against a backdrop of increasing corporate influence in the night-time economy.

Great Book!!! 4 Aug 2003

Format:Paperback
This book presents a new and essential analysis of the changing face of British and World Nightlife. I thought it was brilliant and very readable whilst managing to demonstrate the impact of world corporatisation on our world and playspaces.

It looks at the night life and what is occuring both from a European and an American perspective. It talks about specific places, that many can probably relate to. I used this for my dissertation which was about different culturally based bars in England. Although it doesn't go into a huge amount of detail about the effects of different culture/nationalities, it does go into a lot of depth about the actual culture of a night bar or restaurant.

Overall a very interesting read - worth getting if you have any interest in what has happened and what is changing in nightlife scenes!
