Book Description

5 Feb 2010
Urban Eco Chic shows how we can all recycle materials, use sustainable products and become increasingly energy-efficient in our own homes, without compromising our sense of style. The fact that we must become more eco-aware of the way we live is not in question; the issue is how can we do so without sacrificing the level of comfort and luxury to which so many of us are now accustomed. Urban Eco Chic is about balancing function, practicality and performance with style, sophistication and comfort, proving that eco-friendly practices and chic aesthetic ideas are not incompatible. Renowned eco-designer, Oliver Heath, has a philosophy for decorating which is based around the three elements of Technology, Nature and Vintage. The book demonstrates how a clever combination of pioneering technologies, sustainable materials and recycled or recyclable products can create a functional yet beautiful home. The result is a contemporary look that is ethical, eco-conscious and yet as individual as each homeowner. The book is packed with ideas on how to green your home, how to power it and save energy, as well as simple lifestyle changes to improve your carbon footprint. It is also full of Oliver's personal style tips and ideas so you can develop your own Urban Eco Chic style.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great recommendation from industry expert 26 Nov 2008
Format:Hardcover
Whereas most of my large collection of Ecological books stay on the shelf within arm's length and more frequently referred to books come closer, others gradually move towards the back row and eventually to the archive, I can confirm that this book has found its way on to my desk where I can get at it all the time.
The book structure and format is so right: small nuggets of information, delivered by graphically coded topic bullet points, it's so accessible. I am recommending it to interior design and furniture design students. The scope of coverage is very broad from building/finishing materials through to household goods and appliances which ensure your readers get something to think about every time they consider any household purchase.
I am inspired by the pictures thinking about a much needed garden office and thinking about dismantling pallets for book shelving. Long may it stay on my desk.

Oliver Heath is a familiar face to the British as a designer on Changing Rooms since 2000, and having appeared as an "eco expert" on a number of other shows ever since. Apart from his regular TV spots, Oliver also has his fingers in a number of eco-pies - a regular commentator in The Guardian, his store EcoCentric, his design consultancy Heath Design and now with his new book Urban Eco Chic. The book attempts to not make you feel guilty about all of this, as Oliver implores, "For a long time, guilt has been a key ally in the battle to convert people to a more sustainable mode of living, but I believe it need not be that way ...There is a direct necessity for a change in attitude towards adopting eco-friendly measures within our homes, but we could be doing it through positive free will and aspiration, rather than through negative guilt." My only tiny complaint is that I would have loved to have seen bigger pictures.

5.0 out of 5 stars great inspirational book 21 Oct 2010

Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
A lovely book with some great ideas. I find it really inspirational to look through every so often. I bought it because I really like Oliver Heath's style and designs (I didn't really buy it for the eco aspect although it has some good suggestions for saving money in your household as well as the environment. I love vintage furniture and the idea of doing up old furniture or sprucing up an existing piece inexpensively.
