Product Description

Album Description

• ‘Garage rock’ is the term on everyone’s lips nowadays, yet here is the first opportunity there has been to get the very best on one rockin’ disc. Think of it as a distilled Nuggets without the pop fluff – instead, 100% pure attitude.

• "Ultimate Garage" features those groups most closely associated with the genre, such as the Sonics, Seeds, Count Five and Music Machine. It adds bona-fide rip-roaring, one-shot gems from no-counts like the Wilde Knights, Castaways, Oxford Circle, Fe Fi Four Plus 2 and Electric Company. Additionally, there are a handful of genuine rarities, such as the extended version of the Moving Sidewalks’ classic ‘99th Floor’.

• However, this is a package less for the collector than one aimed fair and square at the garage rock neophyte, or the punter who just needs one disc of pure adrenalin. The booklet is packed with facts and figures on these unsung heroes of high energy rock’n’roll, and the sound quality is the best this material has ever sounded.

5.0 out of 5 stars The true origins of 70's punk, 26 Jan 2006

I first came across this album via a review in the Metro, it suggested short, sharp rock with attitude and boy does it deliver.

From these bands came the Stooges, The White Stripes, The Ramones and virtually all of the best 70's punk. The focus is on tight tunes, great songs, sung with venom and bite. Broken love, going out, drinking and generally causing mayhem is where we're at here and the effect is first rate.

The accompanying booklet provides a myriad of detail on the bands featured and this in itself provides fascinating reading. But, the key is the music. Stick this on when you've a few friends round, grab a few drinks and watch, the effect will be startling.

An essential purchase.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great idea, mostly great music, oddball selection, 27 April 2006

Blimey - "The Ultimate 60s Garage Collection!" - that's something I didn't think I'd see! Is it TV-advertised, with suitably young loud and snotty visuals? It oughtta be. Anyway here's a brand new garage comp aimed at a new generation of listeners curious to dig a little deeper under the current crop of guitar bands. Some classic tunes are included (Litter, Count Five, Music Machine) alongside some odd selections (how many times you wanna hear Teddy & His Patches is probably debatable) but the omissions are many as well. Any collection of the genre that omits ? & The Mysterians' "96 Tears" (albeit due to licensing issues) can't IMO really call itself "Ultimate", can it? And no Barbarians? No Balloon Farm? No Haunted? No Kingsmen, already? Companion volume of Nuggets recommended...

3.0 out of 5 stars Not the ultimate, 24 April 2009

This review is from: Uptight Tonight: The Ultimate 60s Garage Collection (Audio CD)
While selection is all a matter of taste, and it's doubtful if any two garage fans would agree on the ultimate 26 garage tracks, it's a fair bet that no garage fan would agree that all the 26 tracks on this compilation are the 'ultimate'. If it's meant to include "... those groups most closely associated with the genre ..." where's the Shadows of Knight, or the Standells; to name but two not already mentioned by other reviewers. Speaking personally, it's not to say that none of the tracks would feature in my 'ultimate' list; or at least this week's version. The tracks by the Litter, Outcasts, Music Machine, Vagrants, and Mouse and the Traps would be there. Plus tracks by the Sonics and Wailers; though not the ones on this CD. But a genuine 'ultimate', collection without, for example, the Lyrics 'So What', the Tasmanians 'Baby', or the Gonn's 'Blackout Of Gretely', for example, is unthinkable to me. This is not to say that the CD is not worth having, and most of the tracks should be in any garage fans collection,(unfortunately for sales, they probably already are; though not necessarily in this sound quality). But if someone is fairly new to the genre it is doing them a disservice to give the impression that the tracks here are the 'cream', and that everything else is of a lesser quality. Whoever at Ace decided on the subtitle gave the compiler an impossible task; especially given that selection would have been limited to Ace's current licensing deals
