Product Description

The best-selling account of The Velvet Underground phenomenon is now recognised as one of the greatest rock books ever written. First published in 1983, it is based on interviews with all four members of the Velvets, as well as others who became part of Andy Warhol's circle of artistic collaborators.

in their own words 8 Mar 2003
Format:Paperback
This, far from being your average coffee table bio isn't really a bio in the normal sense of the word but, rather, a combination of bio and an "in their own words". Although this means that it can lose its thread occasionally, it also means that you get a very real flavour of that whole period from the point of view of the band and their circle, including Mr Warhol & Nico, of course. The other factor that allows this book to offer a quite untainted perspective is that it was originally published in 1983, i.e. when there were only the 4 original albums available (apart from the obligatory dodgy bootlegs) and, as such, accurately conveys the frustration the band felt at the lack of recognition they had suffered throughout the time they were together and since. It's a good and easy little read and I highly recommend it to anyone remotely interested in the V.U.

This book combines a standard biography and a mass of interviews with everyone involved, meaning it also feels a bit "in their own words", which is still brilliant. Due to the original books publishing date, it means that interviews were conducted with the likes of Nico and Warhol, as well as (almost literally) everyone ever involved with the Velvets. The fact that it pre-dates the deaths of many key players means such an in-depth look at the band will never again be made.
The sections which aren't 'in their own words' are very well researched, and extremely well written, meaning this book stays ingaging to the end.
The update does have a 'quickly stuck on' feel to it, but it remains interesting.
