CD Description

Following on from Visions of Dawn – the 1976 acid-folk lost classic – Upside Down stirs up a time when people dared to make remarkable liberated records like this. In advance of the electric final instalment Broken Bridge Mauricio, Nana and guest vocalist Kay Lyra – who completes the present day folk trio – combine floating harmonies and delicate string-led psychedelia. Maestro’s moving compositions melt together hypnotising strings with his own darting acoustic guitar and wonderfully languid vocals. The master of percussion Nana Vasconcelos brings an endless concoction of exotic instrumentation to stirring life as strange mind-bending vocals move in and out of focus. Nana and Mauricio reunite on this modern acoustic masterwork full of endless simple pleasures. Together at the center of the progression from the underground ‘60s tropicalia and darker afro-samba jazz movements, that rose against the repressive Brazilian military regime, to the free ‘70s Brazilian acid-folk that flourished in North America and Europe – as the musicians were forced in to international exile – Maestro and Vasconcelos have pulled together eleven tracks that stir up this time, but in the backdrop of a liberated, prosperous Brazil. Recorded in late-2009 the pair combined Maestro’s classic and new compositions with modern folk ideas to create a record that outshines many current impressionists. This irresistible inventive folk should exceed even the quiet craze that met Far Out’s discovery of Maestro, Vasconcelos, and Joyce’s 1976 Paris sessions ‘Visions of Dawn’. Inspired by the success Joe Davis encouraged Maestro to return to the studio to put his delicate genius to work on the long-time coming follow up. With Vasconcelos also coaxed back, along with special guest vocalist Kay Lyra – filling Joyce’s spacey songbird role – the joy the pair felt at once again having the freedom to create their own original music radiates from each track on this blissful recording session. Mauricio Maestro began his career in vocal quartet Momentoquatro in the late sixties, before he and Nana Vasconcelos became friends as members of the great Luiz Eça’s thirteen member band Sagrada Familia. The pair also formed part of Milton Nascimento’s Clube De Esquina scene along with Joyce and Marcos Valle on his legendary ‘Clube De Esquina’ album series. Having arranged for Brazil’s top artists from an early age Mauricio Maestro lent his masterful bass playing to Joyce’s classic early albums, The Holy Family, played on and produced ‘Visions of Dawn’ and founded Boca Livre in 1979 - one of the most successful groups ever to emerge from Brazil. Nana Vasconcelos has released more than thirty albums over an epic forty year career that took in spell playing with legendary folk-prog band A Tribo. Vasconcelos is a vocalist and berimbau player of immense quality and displays his percussion skills that saw him named best drummer in the world for eight straight years by US magazine Downbeat. In parallel to these works, Maestro has been developing a personal career as musician, arranger, and also composer and interpreter, but the greatest of his compositions rested unreleased until now. ‘Upside Down’ is an irresistibly mellow collection of soulful Brazilian acoustic music that thrills with understated, dreamlike glory: “On Visions of Dawn I could record for the first time some instrumental and vocal compositions that are a little sample of my production. Songs such as ‘Clareana’ (that became a big hit in Brazil in '80), ‘Jardim dos Deuses’, and instrumental songs such as the title track ‘Visions of Dawn’. Now, I'm very proud in having my first solo album released by Far Out. In this new release I have once more the pleasure to work with that Brasilian genius of percussion (and also a great "philosopher") Naná Vasconcelos. He gives colourful rhythmic environment for my compositions. Also very important was the participation of Kay Lyra, one brilliant singer with a wonderful crystal voice. She gave the female touch that I needed to sweeten the sound of this record. Some great musicians also appear on this album such as Lura Ranevsky on cello, Paulo Guimarães on flutes and João Carlos Coutinho on accordion, besides a ten strong string orchestra. The songs are all my originals except the lyrics of "Todos os Santos", written by Joyce the year following ‘Visions of Dawn’, and the extract of classic "Canto do Pajé" (H. Villa Lobos and C. Paula Barros). I composed each at different moments of my career beginning in 1969 (‘Jungle Bells’), 1971 (‘Ancient Truth’ and ‘Horizonte’), 1977 (‘Todos os Santos’ and ‘Ciclo da Vida’), until ‘Agua Clara’ and ‘Upside Down’, which were written especially for this album. I had a wonderful time recording at Tenda da Raposa studios in Rio with the great engineer David Brinkworth, all under the expert view of Joe Davis. I hope you enjoy, I'm ready with the next instalment…” The third and final record ‘Broken Bridge’ will draw to a mesmerizing conclusion this remarkable five-decade Brazilian-folk trilogy following on from this release of ‘Upside Down’. Drawing upon forty years of song-writing, playing, experimenting, revolution, travel, friendship and a strong Brazilian heart this record and what follows and came before is something only these two Brazilian masters could dream up. Mauricio and Nana have been friends and creating music together from the very beginning of their musical careers. That affection and familiarity flows from each man so that these tracks feel almost effortless in their making.

Now we have written any blog posts for a while due to time constraints (we hope to change that soon) but we actually had no choice but to come out of writers exile when this sublime new album dropped through our inbox the other week, we just couldn't keep it under our hats.

Way back in 1976 Mauricio Maestro & Nana Vasconcelos found themselves in Paris recording the Visions of Dawn album with Joyce. It was an incredibly fertile time for Brazilian music with all sorts of western influences being assimilated into traditional Brazilian music and the burgeoning acid-folk scenes in Europe and North America weren't lost on these artists at the time. Tragically the project somehow got shelved until it was finally released 33 years later in 2009, also on Far Out.

Encouraged by Far Out label boss Joe Davies, Mauricio and Nana got back in the studio in Rio last year alongside guest vocalist Kay Lyra - hired to sweeten things up and now the follow up to Visions of Dawn is about to hit the shelves on November 16th, assuming all goes well and the release isn't put back until 2056. Here's a little taster of what went down in the studio[...]

We're not going to get into depth on each track as it really is an album you just need to listen to start to finish. Maestro has gone to town on the arrangements with words like sumptuous, lush, delicate, intricate, shimmering all coming to mind - the harmonies just wash over you ably supported by subtle psychedelic twists and turns. The percussion from Vasconcelos is impeccable as you'd expect from someone voted best percussionist in the world 7 years running by the Downbeat critics poll and he is ably abetted by an impeccably arranged 10 piece orchestra that just melt into the background like the most natural thing in the world. Maestro darts in an out with his acoustic guitar and his easy vocal style. Apparently the idea was to create an album that stirred the mid '70s but is set in the backdrop of a liberated, prosperous Brazil but to these ears (and admittedly linguistic failings) it sounds like 1976 never went away.

All songs are Maestro originals except the lyrics of 'Todo os Santos' which were written by Joyce back in '77 and extract of classic 'Canto de Pajé' and were written over the preceding 40 years, starting way back in 1971. Apparently there is a follow up album already in the pipeline and all we can say is if it is anything like this then bring it on.
