Cathcart Kings Park New York Munich. Everybody talk about indie music

Essential viewing for anyone interested in the UK independent label Creation.
Director Danny O'Connor has done a great job of making a documentary with enough content to interest fans and general viewers alike. Although for serious music heads and Creation spotters there's enough not included here for the film to be a bit carbohydrate heavy.
Good range of interviewees in the documentary - glad to see ex-Warners chief Rob Dickins included here (McGee's Elevation label was Warners funded) some funny moments from ex-Creation employees ("the first time I took an E was at work"), and the dude from the Jasmine Minks. Irvine Welsh's contributions would benefit from being cut down a bit - although he did record a b-side with Primal Scream once, his bits sound like general third party commentary and offer no new insight. Also - the film could do with some Gallagher comedy gold - anyone remember Noel's roflcopter Albarn impersonation inLive Forever [DVD] [2003]?
The film doesn't really go into enough detail about:
a) Contemporary independents in general - like El, Factory, Cherry Red, RT, 4AD, Mute, and their influence on the kid with the mad ginger Dylan hair.
b) Lesser known Creation acts: Mishka, Momus, Moonshake, Medicine, Medalark 11 - and that's just the Ms.
c) The truth behind the Oasis deal - were they signed to Sony or Creation?
d) The label's end - the film just kind of peters out into an amorphous cloud of Oasisness. Would have preferred some mad stories about the Kevin Rowland album.
All in all excellent film but not quite a classic - 4.5 stars rounded up to 5

I was very excited to watch this. I'm a massive fan of most of the bands in this movie. (My Bloody Valentine, Swervedriver, Jesus & Mary Chain, Oasis, Ride) I was left a bit disappointed.
I had a hard time understanding some of the dialog, especially a few parts in the beginning. I had headphones on, rewound the scene and CRANKED the audio and still couldn't make out 1/3 of the words being said a couple times.
The movie seemed to just jump from one album/band to another and the flow wasn't there for me. I didn't really follow the timeline and was confused by the direction.
I would've preferred to have seen more old and rare footage to make this more re-watchable. Why no early live performances? A live video of the above bands performing in small local venues would've been fantastic. Not a full concert but at least a full song.
As a fan of the label and genre I was glad I watched it but it wasn't compelling enough for me to suggest it to people not already fans of this sound.

I went to see this film with a friend (and big Creation fan) last night in Cardiff, what a great film. I have to confess to not knowing too much about the 90's indie scene, of course I knew about Oasis and Primal Scream, but the other names (The Loft, Teenage Fanclub, Ride and others) were new to me, and not really knowing the story wasn't expecting too much. How wrong I was, this was a fascinating account of a record label that clearly produced some of the most explosive music of its time, underpinned by a dedication to the rock and roll ethic both on music and in very day life. I had no idea about their role in Acid House movement or that they sold so many records - amazing for these self confessed drug fuelled party animals. Really well styled around grainy uber cool footage and some brilliant graphics, the interviews steer clear of commentators and sticks to the bands and those who worked at the label, which is a breath of fresh air. There are some really funny moments, especially when one of the bands bought a tank with their promotional budget to deliver their record to radio, and Noel Gallagher is witty and sincere. Its a great film and I already want to see it again!

Amazing viewing!!
I watched this at the cinema and can't wait to see it again! This doc does and amazing job at telling the story of the wonderful and crazy world of Creation. You have to watch it!!
