Product Description

Winner of the Mojo Vision Award 2011, Upside Down is the definitive film about Creation Records, one of the world's most successful and colorful independent labels. This is the story of the rock n roll dream and its accompanying nightmares. Millions of sales on both sides of the Atlantic, near bankruptcy, pills, thrills, spats, prats, success, excess, pick me ups, breakdowns and of course some of THE defining music of the late 20th Century. This is the definitive and fully authorised story of the UK's most inspired and dissolute label, from the Jesus & Mary Chain at the Living Room to Oasis at Knebworth.

Essential viewing for anyone interested in the UK independent label Creation.

Director Danny O'Connor has done a great job of making a documentary with enough content to interest fans and general viewers alike. Although for serious music heads and Creation spotters there's enough not included here for the film to be a bit carbohydrate heavy.

Good range of interviewees in the documentary - glad to see ex-Warners chief Rob Dickins included here (McGee's Elevation label was Warners funded) some funny moments from ex-Creation employees ("the first time I took an E was at work"), and the dude from the Jasmine Minks. Irvine Welsh's contributions would benefit from being cut down a bit - although he did record a b-side with Primal Scream once, his bits sound like general third party commentary and offer no new insight. Also - the film could do with some Gallagher comedy gold - anyone remember Noel's roflcopter Albarn impersonation inLive Forever [DVD] [2003]?

The film doesn't really go into enough detail about:

a) Contemporary independents in general - like El, Factory, Cherry Red, RT, 4AD, Mute, and their influence on the kid with the mad ginger Dylan hair.

b) Lesser known Creation acts: Mishka, Momus, Moonshake, Medicine, Medalark 11 - and that's just the Ms.

c) The truth behind the Oasis deal - were they signed to Sony or Creation?

d) The label's end - the film just kind of peters out into an amorphous cloud of Oasisness. Would have preferred some mad stories about the Kevin Rowland album.

All in all excellent film but not quite a classic - 4.5 stars rounded up to 5

I was very excited to watch this. I'm a massive fan of most of the bands in this movie. (My Bloody Valentine, Swervedriver, Jesus & Mary Chain, Oasis, Ride) I was left a bit disappointed.

I had a hard time understanding some of the dialog, especially a few parts in the beginning. I had headphones on, rewound the scene and CRANKED the audio and still couldn't make out 1/3 of the words being said a couple times.

The movie seemed to just jump from one album/band to another and the flow wasn't there for me. I didn't really follow the timeline and was confused by the direction.

I would've preferred to have seen more old and rare footage to make this more re-watchable. Why no early live performances? A live video of the above bands performing in small local venues would've been fantastic. Not a full concert but at least a full song.

As a fan of the label and genre I was glad I watched it but it wasn't compelling enough for me to suggest it to people not already fans of this sound.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Film... 5 May 2011
Format:DVD
I went to see this film with a friend (and big Creation fan) last night in Cardiff, what a great film. I have to confess to not knowing too much about the 90's indie scene, of course I knew about Oasis and Primal Scream, but the other names (The Loft, Teenage Fanclub, Ride and others) were new to me, and not really knowing the story wasn't expecting too much. How wrong I was, this was a fascinating account of a record label that clearly produced some of the most explosive music of its time, underpinned by a dedication to the rock and roll ethic both on music and in very day life. I had no idea about their role in Acid House movement or that they sold so many records - amazing for these self confessed drug fuelled party animals. Really well styled around grainy uber cool footage and some brilliant graphics, the interviews steer clear of commentators and sticks to the bands and those who worked at the label, which is a breath of fresh air. There are some really funny moments, especially when one of the bands bought a tank with their promotional budget to deliver their record to radio, and Noel Gallagher is witty and sincere. Its a great film and I already want to see it again!

3.0 out of 5 stars Rock 'n' Roll Madness 5 Nov 2011

I thought this was quite entertaining, but I'd read The Creation Records Story: My Magpie Eyes are Hungry for the Prize beforehand and some of the more amusing tales from that were absent from this documentary. They should have interviewed Kevin Rowland. Also, no Slowdive. Plus nothing on how House of Love went downhill after signing to a major label. And nothing on the bitter breakup of The Loft. And what about the shocking scenes of 1997 when Gallagher and McGee were filmed shaking hands and hobnobbing with Tony Blair and his cronies? And what about when Ride had their acrimonious split? I would have liked to have heard more from any bands who had a bad experience with Creation also. It was a bit kind to McGee and co overall, I think.

3.0 out of 5 stars Indie for beginners 16 May 2011
Format:Blu-ray
Like other comments on here I agree this is too fast. So fast in fact that they start fudging the timeline a bit around 1989 to make everything fit.

If you know NOTHING about creation this is very informative, if not its just decent entertainment. Things that need to be discussed in detail (the recording of Loveless, House of Love going to Fontana, Sugar etc) are glossed over. And I don't ever remember Ride being as popular as claimed here.

You benefit nothing from Blu, and the extras are just more of the same talking head stuff often repeating. Where are the video's featured in the documentary?

That being said, its a good effort, never boring and covers a vital time in the music industry. The death of 'real' indie.

Worth a watch, but only once.
