If there's one band who like to open an album with a stomping electro-glam rock political epic, it's Muse.
Uprising begins with an octave jumping crunchy bassline before diving into a synthesized string lead, which is reminiscent of the Doctor Who theme. It really is a catchy hook, and although the lyrics are sung rather low compared to Matt's familiar high pitched screaming on songs such as "Showbiz", they are still quite memorable, although they are typically flooded with the over the top themes Muse are famous for.
The lyrics in the chorus however, are quite simple, and Muse are determined to have you chanting "They will not force us!" for weeks after hearing the song. Following the second chorus is a nice blues-ey bridge, which is probably the highlight of the song, and the song is closed with a third chorus.
Depending on the format of this single, there are 2 possible B-Sides:
CD: "Uprising (Does It Offend You, Yeah? Remix)": NOT as awful as it's reputation suggests, it takes a couple of listens to be able to appreciate it without getting a headache. It's a pretty average remix, one which adds MOAR Cowbell, which I found quite amusing. Does It Offend me? No, but it shouldn't be taken seriously.
7": "Who Knows Who": It's a nice B-Side, a collaboration with Mike Skinner of the Streets, but it's a shame Muse couldn't have given us a better B-Side than a quick jam the was leaked onto the internet more than a year ago. If you're a hardcore Muse fan, you probably would have had this song for a quite a while before this single was released.
So, to summarise...
UPRISING: *****
DOES IT OFFEND YOU, YEAH? REMIX: ****
WHO KNOWS WHO: ****
