5.0 out of 5 stars This clarifies the debt we owe to the Merchant Navy, 8 Nov 2009
This review is from: Upon Their Lawful Occasions: Reflections of a Merchant Navy Officer During Peace and War (Paperback)
This book has been a long time coming. There are a lot of books on the main services - Bomber Command, Fighter Command, Army, Navy etc (probably too much) but we know so little about the role played by the Merchant Navy. This book clarifies their key role in supporting the Allied war effort and the sacrifices they made. Their war was five years long of continuous strain, engagements and losses. Quite simply stunning and very, very, thought provoking. A huge credit to Mr Upton.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awe-inspiring and humbling, 13 Aug 2007
This review is from: Upon Their Lawful Occasions: Reflections of a Merchant Navy Officer During Peace and War (Paperback)
This is a must-read for anyone interested in how the 'Merchant Navy', a title invented by Churchill, faced up to the rigours of the Atlantic campaign. Upton's professionalism and courage come through in equal measure - and how very humbling they are. Vivid story-telling, lucid analysis, and all set in a very human context.
