Entertaining all the way. (TLS )

Lovesey creates the ambience of Bath with all his customary skill... and the plotting has the satisfyingly complex structure. (CRIME TIME )

It's masterfully plotted stuff, and distinguished by Lovesay's array of neatly sketched characters and his deft handling of amnesia. (OBSERVER )

Unputdownable! 1 Jan 2006
By Baz
Format:Paperback
I picked this up on a recommendation and it was the first Peter Lovesey novel that I've read, but it won't by any means be the last. Lovesey is consummate at his drawing of characters, his plotting and the drawing out of suspense - so much so that I couldn't put it down and finally finished it at two o'clock in the morning, disappointed that I'd come to the end! Needless to say, I'll now be reading the whole Peter Diamond series and the rest of Lovesey's work. Great stuff from a master storyteller!

The plot is complex starting off with a girl found injured in a hospital car park and suffering from amnesia. A curmudgeonly old farmer appears to have committed suicide at an isolated farmhouse. The waters are muddied even more when a girl falls off a roof to her death. Peter Diamond is not getting on well with his colleagues and is uninterested in loss of memory or suicide. He wants a murder to investigate before he dies of boredom. But all is not what it seems and soon he has more than enough to investigate. Full of memorable characters - especially the shoplifter with morals - Ada - the story intrigues you from the first page. The conclusions ties up all the loose ends in a satisfactory manner.

I've enjoyed several of Peter Lovesey's books, including this one. As usual there's several overlapping stories that carry the book along at a good pace and are satisfyingly concluded by the end of the book. One of the things I like about this author's books is that's there not too much gruesome detail about the murders but there's plenty of character development and a fair bit of humour. The stories in this particularly book are gripping and I've only down-graded my rating only because the main story depends on the principle character being found in an amnesic state, an over-worked favourite device of authors and film-makers. I've never heard of a patient with retrograde amnesia in which he/she has no idea who they are or anything about their personal history, while at the same time can remember historical events and people from the same time-period. Nor for that matter have I heard of patients (except in films and books) losing their memories as a consequence of a traumatic psychological events. Maybe I'm nit-picking as I often suspend belief over other aspects of crime fiction! Despite my misgivings I did enjoy the book.
