The PC Hardware Bible 17 Mar 2003
By Mike
Format:Paperback
This book contains just about everything you're ever going to need to know about PC hardware. I was about to start building my own PC to link to my current one and start a home network when I stumbled across this. It changed my mind about a few details that I had in mind about designing the new computer and answered many questions along the way - in addition to that, I found myself reading more as it is very informative and written in a relaxed way that lends itself to further investigation.

The chapters cover all the main components of a PC - processor, memory, hard drives, optical drives, BIOS, motherboards, power supplies etc... and there is a very useful chapter on building your own computer. The glossary at the end is comprehensive to say the least, and provides information on the seemingly endless abbreviations used in the computer industry. I would regard myself as a very competent computer user - I've been using them for many years including IBM PC's, Macs and UNIX and a bit of programming here and there, I use computers every day at work and home, yet every time I need to find something out - whether for work, or just curiosity, this book always seems to have the answers, I can't praise it more - highly recommended.

This book is designed for PC engineers - its full of technical information and schematic diagrams covering ALL imaginable PC hardware. The text is very readable but if your new to PC internals then you would do better to look at other books (eg. Mike Meyers All-in-One A+ Study Guide).

The accompanying DVD contains PDF (Adobe Acrobat) versions of previous editions of the book which are easy to search through and also approx. 1hour of DVD video presented by Scott Mueller himself. He's not the best of presenters and the 10 or so topics presented seem an odd combination but quite informative (i enjoyed watching him 'fry' an AMD Athlon CPU!)

Its a BIG book containing BIG information. The field guide is much smaller but quite comprehensive too.

Hello,

This book only give a superficial and incomplete referece. For exemple, the extern ms-dos command fdisk not has the options /mbr and /cmbr 1. Not has any c+/pascal/basic code to check any computer part-hardware and don't included any software (free, shareware and demo).
I am only can say that I am enjoy see again old CPU and another museum's hardware.

Sincerely
