4.0 out of 5 stars Useful at a higher level 22 Dec 2007
By Daniel
I have read Ms Jubb's previous publication "French Grammar in Context" and found it to be very useful. Naturally, when I saw that she was the author of this book, I picked it up right away.

This book is a 30 day revision guide for those studying French at a higher level. It is very well laid out, easy to use and helps you to improve in 3 main areas: style, vocabulary and grammar. The exercises, which are numerous, reinforce what you have learned and are often used to point out areas in which students make mistakes.

I have just one criticism of this book: the chapter on past participle agreements. This section is very complex, hard to grasp and uses far too much jargon. For this section, I recommend her previous publication. Otherwise, a very useful and concise book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Upgrade Your French review 20 Dec 2009
This book has been a massive help to me; allowing me to review all the topics of french grammar that I've found tricky during my years of studying the language. It allows you to go over one grammatical topic each day, spending less than one hour testing your abilities. As well as this, at the end of each topic chapter there are references to larger grammar reference books, which allows you to improve on weak areas you may have. I have found this book to be very helpful, and would reccommend it to french students who struggle with grammar or need to refresh their memories.

5.0 out of 5 stars First class revision and overview 30 Mar 2010
By Bonobo
Having studied French at degree level in the 1970s I am now coming back to it after years of neglect. I used Upgrade Your French as a way to revise and reactivate grammar that I had not considered or not consciously used since my student days. The book was successful in this beyond my expectations.

I used my workday lunchtimes to complete each section in turn, working with Hawkins & Towell's French Grammar and Usage. After completing each section I revised the grammar for the next. Jubb's book often had far clearer explanations of grammar points than H&T. I scored an average of 86% over the whole book! Not bad for someone who hadn't done any French grammar for 35 years.

The book has been very successful in highlighting my strengths and weaknesses so I can devise an efficient strategy for re-learning the stuff I have forgotten.

Highly recommended.

I bought this book because I have only done French at night school and "on the go" after living a year in France, and I needed to iron out a lot of imperfections and map it grammatically in my mind.

This book is very good and nifty - thirty lessons, so you do one a day, organised into different themes, with lots of exercises with the answers at the back of the book. It's brilliant for clearing up any minor/major misunderstandings of French, which grammatically can be a minefield!

The downsides? It's not for the faint-hearted. Whilst the content is at the end of the day very sound, the explanations given can be really mind-boggling, with a lot of "grammar-speak" and technical terms, and often you have to look to the examples to actually get what the descriptions are on about. Now, I know that you *need* the technical terms, but if you struggle with a lot of long-winded terminology (as I do!) then it's so easy to get completely lost. In short, your French really has to be already very good to do the exercises, which test the tiny nuances in meaning between often extremely similar grammatical structures. The only reason I was able to manage was because I have already studied Spanish at university (but then, it does point out that this book is designed for degree-level students of French).

Also, it's only cosmetic, but it could do with an injection of colour - grammar can be tedious and the plain black-and-white approach doesn't do anything for it.

All in all though, if you're looking to iron out difficulties, get things straight once and for all and tie up any loose ends, this book is definitely for you.

4.0 out of 5 stars Useful at a variety of levels 7 Dec 2011
I was recommended this book by a lecturer during my French degree, for "ironing out any remaining problems", and it certainly helps with that. The lessons it recommends aren't too heavy, they're quite clear, and the book has certainly helped me banish a few persistent problems in my French writing.

However, I disagree with the description; I actually found the style of writing very condescending. The introduction alone made me cringe with it's affirmation that if you're a high-achiever, it's not for you. It's only for the people who are struggling, and it reiterates that. If you can get past that cloying tone throughout the book, then the content is extremely helpful.
