5.0 out of 5 stars Unmissable documentary, a must-see., 19 Nov 2009

This review is from: Up The Yangtze [2007] [DVD] (DVD)
"I know it's because your father and I don't have the skills, that we have to exploit you. If we had a choice how could we do this to you?"

Up The Yangtze is a riveting, multi-award-winning documentary about the building of the Three Gorges Dam and the flooding that it required. It displaced over a million people, but the documentary focuses on the lives of two children, a young girl from a poor family who force her to leave education and get a job, and a boy from a more well-off family; both of whom are trying to get a job on a cruise ship for mostly western tourists offering a `farewell tour' to the valley which was slowly being flooded.

The film offers an insight to China's increasing reliance on consumer capitalism and tourism: a reliance which takes away as many opportunities as it presents. Coupled with beautiful panoramic shots, and an ending sequence which is both moving and reflective, this is a documentary that should not be missed. Granted it is a little slow, but it is never anything less than fascinating.

This film will make your heart bleed... How tragic the way humans treat each other in the name of 'progress'... a total capitalistic vision of a future hell on earth

5.0 out of 5 stars Masterpiece not Misnomer, 16 Oct 2010

This review is from: Up The Yangtze [2007] [DVD] (DVD)
I am sorry if one reviewer felt Yung Chan's stunning work a misnomer particularly as the review claims a knowledge of China. If misnomer is used to mean an inappropriate title then so be it.In my view the camerawork captures the rivers vanishing beauty perfectly showing but not presenting in the style of Wild China.Living comfortable lives in the West we can only tremble at the thought of two million forcibly resettled in the name of progress.Only time will tell if the price is worth paying. I have sailed the Yangtze river. Stood in awe at the engineering marvel that is the Three Gorges Dam and felt uncomfortable throughout. I urge all who can to see this fabulous piece of work and ask the reviewer 'unlikely to view the film again' to pass his copy to a library to make it available to those who can learn from it. Thank You Yung Chan for what is a masterpiece of observation. Keith
