Decorator and ex-Rugby League player Arthur (Gary Olsen) accepts a high-stakes bet from Reg Welch (Tony Slattery), manager of the tough Cobbler Arms team. Arthur must train a team to beat the Cobbler Arms, and he chooses the weak Wheatsheaf Arms losers, a motley crew who would rather quaff at the local pub. They're uncooperative -- until Arthur introduces them to their new fitness instructor, attractive gym-owner Hazel (Samantha Janus of the Game On comedy series). The training sessions get underway, with Arthur keeping his big bet a secret from all concerned. Set in West Yorkshire, the film was actually shot in Cardiff, Wales. ...Up 'n' Under ( Up and Under )

I'm not a rugby buff, but I thought this was a hilarious romp of a movie. Great cast and Sam Janus is gorgeous. Why oh why have we had to wait so long for this great British comedy to come out in DVD.

Arthur Hoyle (the late Gary Olsen) foolishly accepts a bet from the Manager of the leading, and most brutal, amateur Rugby League sides that he could train any team to beat them in an upcoming local 7 a-side comptetition. His rival (Tony Slattery) nominates The Wheatsheaf and so Arthur's problems begin.
To get his team of mishapen failures into shape, they would sooner spend time in the pub than practice, he enlists the help of local gym owner Hazel Scott (Samantha Janus) as they embark on a Rocky style fitness regime.
It's a classic David v Goliath story as our less than magnificent seven fall at almost every hurdle in the lead up to the big game.
There's a couple of great cameo performances from Griff Rhys-Jones as the local sports reporter and Brian Glover as Arthur's father-in-law and yes it has Samantha Janus in THAT scene.
Unfortunately there are no extras, unless you count the mini-poster insert which has the chapter details.

I remember seeing this film at the cinema some years ago and enjoyed it immensely. I was so very pleased when I saw it was availble on DVD whilst looking for presents on Oxford Street. You often read cynical reviews of British movies but I think this was a marvellous film and recommend it with no reservations.

DVD review
Saw it first time years ago on video and liked it then. Found it on Amazon on DVD just had to buy it to go with "Brassed off" and the "Full Monty".

Great film...
A great film that was filmed in Llanharan in South Wales. I lived in the village at the time and the whole cast and crew were charming. And its a great film too...
