More About the Author

For as long as she can remember, Katie MacAlister has loved reading. Growing up in a family where a weekly visit to the library was a given, Katie spent much of her time with her nose buried in a book. Despite her love for novels, she didn't think of writing them until she was contracted to write a non-fiction book about software. Since her editor refused to allow her to include either witty dialogue or love scenes in the software book, Katie swiftly resolved to switch to fiction, where she could indulge in world building, tormenting characters, and falling madly in love with all her heroes.

Two years after she started writing novels, Katie sold her first romance, Noble Intentions. More than thirty books later, her novels have been translated into numerous languages, been recorded as audiobooks, received several awards, and placed on the New York Times, USA Today, and Publishers Weekly bestseller lists. She also writes for the young adult audience as Katie Maxwell.

Katie lives in the Pacific Northwest with her husband and dogs, and can often be found lurking around online.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant 16 May 2010
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
After reading the first book in the series, Playing With Fire, i just had to buy the second after the cliffhanger of an ending in the first and i really enjoyed it.
I recommend anyone who has bought the first to buy this one too.
Will definitely be buying Me and My Shadow, the third in the series just to see how everything works out.

4.0 out of 5 stars it's dark, it's turbulent, it's steamy 15 Nov 2010
By Rebecca
Format:Mass Market Paperback
While this second book didn't grab me like the first one did, it was still enjoyable. May's life is way more screwed up than Aisling's ever was - it's kinda fun to see what MacAlister can come up with :)
She ends up being Magoth's consort in order to get out of Abbadon and back to Gabriel, along with Magoth whose powers are minimal in our world, but Magoth is just a side plot that doesn't pop up again until the very end. The real story here is about the dragon heart shards that are housed in phylacteries and the mysterious and powerful dragon who can find May in the Shadow World. It's densely plotted for a paranormal romance, it's dark, it's turbulent, it's steamy, and I love May.

4.0 out of 5 stars May-ling: Doppelganger, Dragon Mate, Demon Consort and now a dragon heart vessel... 7 Oct 2008
By Jessie Potts - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Up in Smoke is the second book in the new silver dragon series. It parallels Aisling's novels wonderfully, yet May stands on her own and her story is delightfully funny and completely different. She has to contend with so many people and beings wanting something from her.

The only reason Magoth wants her as a consort is to have access to the mortal world to create mayhem, destruction blah blah blah. Gabriel is fighting to keep May by his side, and all the dragons are trying to figure out who is the real Blue Wyvern Fiat or Bastion, as well as whether or not the Black dragons are their own Sept, and if so what will happen to the Silver Sept who used to be a part of the Black Sept.

As if that wasn't bad Cyrene is convinced she's Kostya's mate, the only reason she can't hold his fire is he isn't officially recognized.... right... and no one wants to break the news to a crazy Naiad who just lost her job as a protector of her spring and lost her common sense in order to create her Doppelganger May. May now has to talk to Neptune (that's right the Roman God) to petition for Cy's job back. Did I mention the one dragon who everyone though Kostya had killed is running around in the shadow world, Baltic.

This story is definitely action packed and a great follow up story. I love Gabriel but every time Aisling and Drake are mentioned I keep my fingers crossed that Katie MacAlister is writing their continued story quickly. All in all I can't wait for the third.

3.0 out of 5 stars This is book 2. Good story, no resolution yet 21 Oct 2008
By C. Ayres - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Mass Market Paperback
I enjoyed the story and tend to buy any and all of Katie MacAlister's books because they are engaging, humorous and deliciously, sinfully sexy in the male leads.

This is book 2 of the Silver Dragons series (book 1 is Playing with Fire (Silver Dragons, Book 1)). I love the character, May and her sexy Gabriel but I was disappointed that nothing got done in this story. There were several issues to deal with: Magoth and his evil intents that were never brought to light; Cyrene and her poluted "pool"; the mysterious emergence of a dragon in the shadow world; not even Aisling having her baby! I feel like we did a lot of running around without really getting anywhere. I'm still looking forward to the next book, but I think some of my enthusiasm has been regretfully doused.

3.0 out of 5 stars all smoke, no resolution 22 Jan 2009
By she reads - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Mass Market Paperback
This is book #2 in the 'silver dragons' series, book #6 total if you count the four green dragon/aisling grey novels. This is important to know going in- because if you haven't read up you will probably won't be satisfied.

Ok, so I really like Katie MacAlister's dragon series, and the story of the silver dragons is getting good and interesting. It's fun to see a different perspective and a very different heroine. I like May a lot- I see great things happening in her future in this series. I think.

So here's my problem with this book- there are a lot of plot lines, interesting characters, and great subjects working up... but damn it nothing is resolved. Nothing is completed, finalized, and there's no sense of close of an adventure at the end. This is what I'd call a bridge book. My bet is that #3 in this silver dragon series will rock hard core, and if you're a fan of the series it's worth reading to keep up on all the happenings.

I'm trusting Katie is going somewhere good with all this... guess I'll have to wait and see!

Up in Smoke

Gabriel, Gabriel, Gabriel. *sigh* I may have had this weird picture in my head while reading this book that Gabriel looked like Jason Momoa in this picture.

And you girls might know of my love and fascination with that man. So that coupled with the fact that Gabriel is just smooth and sexy and Oh.My.Gawd.HAWT certainly made me tingnle and just want to get some of his fire!

But as much as I thought I was going to love Gabriel and May as a couple, they sort of fizzled out for the most part of this book. Yeah, they had some parts where I liked them together but for the most part I was neither loving them nor hating them as a couple.

The story was pretty interesting, with May stuck in Abbadon and pretty much having to "marry" the Demon Lord Magoth. Is it wrong of my to like his character? I know he is meant as the bad guy here but I developed a sort of crush on him, with all his full-of-himself comments and thinking he's the greatest gift to women, how can anyone not want to have a piece of him? LOL

Speaking of funny characters, he kind of took the place of Jim in this book, of course he couldn't compare. Jim was sort of absent in this story and we only got a few of his good lines. But the ones we did get had me laughing out loud. Aisling is ready to pop (have her baby) so I really can't wait for that to happen. And Cyrene, well.... she still annoyed me.

In terms of plot there was a lot of action, demons running rampant in the human world, dragons walking the shadow world, dragon politics and new characters popping up from the ummm dead. Fiat, that little slimy bastard! I do feel like I want to get through the silver dragons so I can have some more Baltic!! Must read faster!

Do not buy this book on kindle, The chapters are not in order, very confusing to read that way, and hard to keep the story flowing, It is a good story but not worth the back and forth to read it.
