In the same medium of Carry On films, the inuedo, the one liners, and brilliance of cheaply filmed British humour, this film ranks extremely highly. I watched this film on TV whilst a kid, bopped around to the title music, and then creased up to the fabulous one-liners..on top of which you have Michael Horden and some great breasts and Ned Sherrin's direction.Watch and giggle.

Up Pompeii 10 Jun 2011
By C. Lane
Format:DVD
This is what made my generation laugh - a mixture of mild naughtiness, good writing, visual fun. By today's standards it is, of course, totally non-PC and sexist and should not be viewed by anyone in academe or in public employment. Buy it before someone bans it.

After the success of the hit BBC series it was not surprising when this movie version of "Up Pompeii" was made in the 70s & as you would expect Frankie Howerd takes the character of slave Lurcio from small screen to big screen with absolute ease!! The movie version contains all the same ingredients and characters from the TV series (Ludicrous Sextus, Ammonia, Nausius and Erotica) but interestingly and somewhat surprisingly all the main characters are played by different actors/actresses than those in the orginal series!!(not quite sure why??). Anyway the innuendos and sauciness come aplenty during this super bawdy romp which is both funny and delightful from start to finish!! The only thing that let the movie version down was that it wasn't of course filmed in front of a live audience which is where Frankie Howerd really shone during the BBC series, as his ad-libs with the audience during the weekly show just added that extra something!! That aside I would heartily recommend this DVD if you want something easy to watch and a good laugh too!! And if you don't want to watch it... then "Please Yourselves!!". Salute!!
