From Amazon.co.uk

Up in the Air transforms some painful subjects into smart, sly comedy--with just enough of the pain underneath to give it some weight. Ryan Bingham (George Clooney) spends most of his days traveling around the country and firing people; he's hired by bosses who don't have the nerve to do their layoffs themselves. His life of constant flight suits him--he wants no attachments. But two things suddenly threaten his vacuum-sealed world: his company decides to do layoffs via video conference so they don't have to pay for travel, and Bingham meets a woman named Alex (Vera Farmiga, The Departed), who seems to be the female version of him… and of course, he starts to fall in love. Writer-director Jason Reitman is building a career from funny but thoughtful movies about compromised people--a pregnant teen in Juno, a cigarette-company executive in Thank You for Smoking. George Clooney has a gift for playing smart men who aren't quite as smart as they think they are (Michael Clayton, Out of Sight). The combination is perfect: Bingham is charming and sympathetic but clearly missing something, and Up in the Air captures that absence with clarity and compassion. The outstanding supporting cast includes Anna Kendrick (Rocket Science), Jason Bateman (Arrested Development), Danny McBride (Pineapple Express), Melanie Lynskey (Away We Go), and others, each small part pitched exactly right.--Bret Fetzer

Product Description

George Clooney stars in this satirical comedy drama based on the novel by Walter Kirn. Ryan Bingham (Clooney) is a corporate downsizing expert - in other words, his job is to fire people from theirs - and he takes his job very seriously. He travels the length and breadth of the country, racking up air miles and living out of a suitcase, and relishing every moment of it. When his job and way of life come under threat by new centralised procedures implemented by his hotshot colleague Natalie (Anna Kendrick), Ryan determines to show her just how valuable his role is - but instead ends up facing up to some of the pitfalls of his lifestyle. The film won the 2010 BAFTA for Best Adapted Screenplay.

4.0 out of 5 stars A bit of a surprise 6 Mar 2011
By Cuban Heel VINE™ VOICE
Format:DVD
I finally got around to watching this, slightly put off by the impression it was a romantic comedy. If I'd known it was by the same director as Juno, I would have gotten to it much sooner.

First and foremost, this isn't a romantic comedy. Not at all. To me it felt like watching an American indie film, something along the lines of Juno or Lost in Translation (which it actually reminded me of quite significantly), but made with a bigger budget. Clooney is great in it. Self assured and blase, then brought crashing back to earth by a discovery about the woman he's met.

The supporting actors are great too and there was a brilliant sense of the emptiness of a life spent in transit. It wasn't the best film I've ever seen, but it was interesting and well acted and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Definitely one to watch if you like the movies I've mentioned above. But not a romantic comedy (so maybe not for those of you who loved Kate and Leopold etc.)

3.0 out of 5 stars Hire and fire exposed 24 Jun 2012
Format:DVD
This is not a comedy, this is not light hearted entertainment! The trailer,I have seen, is creating a completely wrong impression. The funny bits (mainly in the beginning) will be most appreciated by frequent travellers. From own experience they are not only funny but real.
The plot of the film is a bit weak and not very convincing. The environment shown along the personal story line is - at least for a European- disturbing and I would have hoped it would make people reflect on a culture where firing by video link can be conveyed as a real option.
Watch this film carefully and it is quite revealing about parts of US corporate culture.
If you are looking for a funny movie do not go for it, if you are looking for a socially critical relevant movie do not go for it. If you want both mixed together with some well known actors and you get it for a bargain price - then you can do a lot worse.

Basically, here's the deal. Before you rent a film, watch the trailer first or read up on some reviews. Then you wont 'be forced' to come onto websites such as this and rate it 1/5 stars, because you were expecting some sort of epic action-drama.

It's thoughtful, provocative and one of my favorite films of all time. But it's not fast, and there's literally no action. I'm just saying, don't rate it based on what it's not. Whatever.

5.0 out of 5 stars Swoon...
It's George Clooney, what more needs to be said?! This is a sometimes funny, sometimes sad, but a different type of film to the expected 'love-interest' tale. I enjoyed it.

Clooney is actually fabulous in this film - do not be put off by his good looks. Here he shows he really can act - and Vera Farmiga is pretty great too. Read more

Bought this cos it sounded very good. Storyline was quite good but it didn't really keep my attention even though George Clooney was the lead part.

5.0 out of 5 stars Up in The Air
Up in The Air is a film that has everything. There is comedy and there is pathos. There is also George Clooney at his best. All in all a good story well told. Just brilliant.
