Book Description

In this much-anticipated sequel to the internationally best-selling picture book Lost and Found, we re-visit the boy and the penguin after their trip to the South Pole…

The boy and the penguin still enjoy spending all their time together… That is, until the penguin starts to dream of flying, ignoring the boys advice that it is impossible.

Running away, the penguin visits place after place, searching for a chance to get his feet off the ground. But will flying be everything he had hoped? And is the boy missing him, as much as he is missing the boy?

A heart-warming story about friendship, love and reaching for your dreams, from highly-regarded, multi-award-winning author-illustrator Oliver Jeffers.

Oliver Jeffers' 'Lost and Found' is my favourite children's book. It's a beautiful story about a boy who befriends a penguin and the illustrations are incredible. He has published other books since but 'Up And Down' is effectively a direct sequel...

The boy and the penguin are best friends and do everything together. But the companionship faces disruption when the penguin decides that there's something he wants to do, he wants to try to use his stubby wings to fly ...on his own. Their little adventure results in visits to the zoo, a airport, and finally a circus.

The story itself is fairly good, but what really makes the book is Jeffers' fantastic artwork. His great style is wonderfully cute and manages to capture the emotions of the two best friends brilliantly. The characters don't have very expressive faces but the body language seems to magically portray feelings.

In a nutshell: A great book to add to a family collection which both children and parents will enjoy. Especially for those who loved Lost and Found.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Gem 8 Jan. 2011
    Format:Hardcover
I bought this book for my two sons aged 7 and 3. We have the other Oliver Jeffers books and have always enjoyed them. Up and down is another beautifully written and illustrated book. It features the same characters as in previous books (How to catch a star, Lost and found, A way back home) so it engages the children with the boy and penguin straight away, although if this is the first book you've read, you will understand the characters easily too. It covers the same themes, friendship, loyalty, love etc. It is a lovely book, with humorous text and beautiful illustrations and is now another bedtime favourite for my boys.

It is a supremely written book for all ages! The story is sooooo heart warming and inspirational. My 6 year old nephew rated it his lfavorite Oliver Jeffers book to date. We are definitely going to stock up on the rest of Oliver's book.

Thanks too to Amazon UK for show-casing Oliver's books as I am unable to find them in Singapore. My first book was from Shakespeare & Co in Paris.

4.0 out of 5 stars Another lovely story by Oliver Jeffers 12 Jan. 2011
    Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
This is another simple story with a powerful message from the author, Oliver Jeffers. I got it for a 3 year old howevr having read it, I think it would better suit a 4 or 5 year old. I do prefer a few of his other books more, I think this one was a little disappointing in some ways but still in all, a lovely story

4.0 out of 5 stars Charming little story 25 Sept. 2010
    By Peter42
    Format:Hardcover
Good follow up to Lost and Found. Should make a good animated film like L & F. Reinforces the message of friendship and unconditional love. Though primarily directed at children the story gives the adult reader pause to think about the importance of friendships for both adults and children. Lots of talking points for discussion with children while making the adult reader think and examine his or her feelings.Lost and Found

5.0 out of 5 stars The story is simple and beautifully told 12 Jun. 2013
    Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
There was once a penguin who decided it wished to fly. It did have wings afterall! Not a novelty starting point, but the drawings and the story are told with such sweetness and coziness that you will love it as much as your little one. Best part, for me, besides the visual appeal, is that it is easy for even very young children to follow along and react to specific points or sentences of the story, repeating words or parts of it. Easy to create interaction while reading it out loud.
