Biography

R.E.M. was an American rock band formed in Athens, Georgia, USA, in 1980 by Michael Stipe (lead vocals), Peter Buck (guitar), Mike Mills (bass guitar and backing vocals), and Bill Berry (drums and percussion). R.E.M. was one of the first popular alternative rock bands, and gained early attention due to Buck's ringing, arpeggiated guitar style and Stipe's unclear vocals. R.E.M. released ... 5.0 out of 5 stars Nice, not essential upgrade 14 May 2006
Format:Audio CD
Musicwise this album is very good - see main (CD only) page for reviews of that though.

The sound on this DVD-A is very clear, especially the vocals, however I feel the multi channel mix subtracts from the performance, it's confused with instruments coming out from weird places for seemingly no reason, some albums get away from this treatment, this one doesn't. It has two different options for play on DVD-A however, multi channel and 2 channel. The 2 channel is amazing, much better quality thatn the CD (if your equipment can notice it - if you can't tell the difference between CD and MP3, don't get this). I previously owned the original CD but had it stolen and feel this is only worth getting if you don't already have the original CD, unless your audio equipment can bring out the quality of the 2 channel DVD-A.

If you don't know REM, I think this is a very good introduction. Definately in the top 1/4 of my music collection, it's unusual torelisten to a CD more than 5 years after first acquiring it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Remaster is a Must! 5 Mar 2005
By Veritas - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
There has been mixed excitement among R.E.M. fans of the re-release of older catalogue items that include a DVD-A with 5.1 surround. Some reviewers have stated this is nothing more than a poorly disguised money making scheme. To those people I ask, have you listened to it?

"Up" was recieved with mixed reviews when it was first released in 1998. For some reason people expect a band to have a signature sound and R.E.M. has proven through the years that their signature is the ability to change with the times and capture different feelings. This is a collection of more mellow sounds and I distinctly remember buying the CD in 1998, taking it home and listening to it over and over all night long.

The first song, "Airportman" sets the mood of the disc. When I first heard "Lotus" I remember going to the player to try to figure out which Cure CD I had accidently inserted only to find that this was infact R.E.M.

The highlight of the album is "At my Most Beautiful" which is a lovely ballad and I hate to sound silly, but probably one of the most poetic pieces of music I have ever heard. Stipe's voice in the later albums (post Green and Out of Time) shows such remarkable depth and range. Not to mention Mike Mills and Peter Buck really coming into their own as performers and using the music to speak the emotions.

Now, why should you spend the extra money on this disc verses the older version? I love music so this was a no-brainer for me: buy the new releases even though I have perfectly good copies of many of them. The set comes with the standard CD which is no different than the one I have. The 2nd disc is a DVD-A that contains the song set in 5.1, which has so many more dimensions when played on the right equipment. I closed my eyes and there were times I had to peak to make sure Mike Mills was not playing bass in my living room. The richness of sound alone justified the expenditure and the small tones and sounds that I never heard in the thousands of times I had played this disc. In addition, there is a photo gallery with several nice shots of the band. There is also a Video Documentary with the band playing "Lotus" "Daysleeper" and "At My Most Beautiful." It is interesting to get these shots because one can easily see how much Stipe, Mills and Buck enjoy making the music.

If you have not purchased "Up" in the past, the new release makes it the perfect time to add this piece to your collection. This is a great album for when you are serving wine and cheese versus beer and peanuts and want to set a calmer mode. The multiple ballads makes this a great chick night recording as well. If you liked the album in the past, seriously consider upgrading if you have 5.1 equipment as you will not be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning Record. 29 May 2013
By crank - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Even the departed drummer thought this record was one of their best. It is. No need to even take a look at the negative reviews in my mind. People who cannot appreciate this are not REM fans plain and simple. It really was their last masterpiece and a part of the 90s run that few but the most jaded of fans would claim could have been any better.

DVDA has high-res 5.1 and 2.0 24/44. Glorious. All that needs be said. I was younger before and didn't pick these up because I had the versions on CD. Well, these DVDAs are getting VERY rare and I would grab them while you can if you are into high-def audio. New Adventures and Automatic can barely be found anymore for decent prices unless you are lucky to come by a version in store. UP is just as good as any of REMs best records front to back. No question about it in my mind. It is cohesive, enchanting, and very well-written.

3.0 out of 5 stars New Re-Release Package 5 Nov 2005
By Thomas D. Ryan - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
I don't mean this to sound like a left-handed compliment, but the best thing about Up is that it manages to sound new, despite the fact that this was R.E.M.'s 11th album of new studio material. Honestly, not many artists can withstand such scrutiny without repetition, and yet the band sounds fresh, creative and emotionally honest throughout this entire set. This is all the more remarkable since it is the band's first album without founding member Bill Berry. Berry's absence forced the remaining members to rethink their methodology and get creative in his absence. At times, the production suggests the richness of peak-era Brian Wilson ("At My Most Beautiful"). Most surprising is how Michael Stipe expands his palette to include a series of gently emotive soundscapes with some of the richest melodies he's ever written ("Daysleeper", "Suspicion", "At My Most Beautiful", the short hidden track titled "I'm Not Over You"). Most touching is "Hope," a reflective piece rich in wordplay that confronts illness and mortality with sensitivity and grace. Fifteen years into their career, the band still sounds vital, proving not just that they are relevant, but that they remain one of the best. A- Tom Ryan

5.0 out of 5 stars Buy this! Buy this! 14 Nov 2013

Buy this! You won't regret it! It contains some of my favorite songs and the DVD with the 3 songs performed during the Uptake documentary are worth it. My only complaints are that I wish the entire Uptake documentary was featured on the DVD because I love things like that AND if Mike Mills had sung lead on one of the tracks BUT I always say that. :-)

This album is often looked over just because it's post Bill Berry but it is a very strong album and the songs are very emotional and hard hitting as far as I'm concerned. Just listen to Sad Professor, Hope and the Apologist and you'll see what I mean. And of course, it contains what may be the most romantic song on the planet - At My Most Beautiful.

Kudos to the best alternative rock band that there ever was!
5.0 out of 5 stars Thumbs "Up" on this late classic by R.E.M.! 9 April 2014

Found this version years after original cd; I already liked this experimental outing by R.E.M., now enjoy it more in 5.1 as new textures emerge. Sounds swirl, guitar parts & vocals vibrate anew, clearer. I recommend this DVD-A to fans of these 'retirees'!
